THE ROAD TO COLLAPSE
Fall 2015
A world financial collapse, and with it an even more disruptive societal collapse, is inevitable and imminent. Global
financial elites realize this, and they are quietly taking steps to freeze the financial system in place when the panic
begins, and then reset it on terms favorable to themselves. The Road to Collapse shines a light on the dynamics
that make the collapse inevitable and the political calculations designed to preserve elite power at the expense of
the middle class. Investors may not be able to avoid the coming calamity, but they can read the elite playbook in
advance and not be victimized as the plan unfolds. James Rickards is the bestselling author of Currency Wars and

THREE CHOICES FOR A SUPERPOWER
May 2015
Ian Bremmer calls for a complete rethinking of America as a superpower. We can’t police every street corner
around the world, but if we don’t clearly define our interests and place in the world, the world will decide our role
for us. Bremmer presents three alternate views for the next America and compels us to decide now what we want
it to look like. This involves clearly defining our responsibilities, opportunities, and limits. A foreign policy divided
against itself cannot stand; as the world’s only superpower, America must choose which path it will follow into the
future. Bremmer is the author of The End of the Free Market and Every Nation for Itself, among others.

Fiorina, Carly
UNTITLED
May 2015
Since the publication of her bestselling memoir Tough Choices, former Hewlett Packard CEO Carly Fiorina has run
for office, battled breast cancer, and suffered the loss of a child. She has learned first-hand how liberal orthodoxy
marginalizes women or suppresses their enthusiasm, and she knows what it takes to persevere through difficult
times. She knows that politics is primarily about people and recognizes the need for conservatives to engage
women through personal interactions with voters. Drawing on her experience in the tech sector, she recognizes
the technology gap between conservatives and liberals, too, and knows how to close it. In this book, Fiorina
provides a clear, cogent, and common-sense blueprint for the conservative movement. With grace and strength,
she speaks directly to conservatives looking to reach across the gender gap. More importantly, she reaches out
directly to women, empowering them to speak boldly and clearly about the value of conservative principles.

THE SELF-MADE BILLIONAIRE EFFECT: How Extreme Producers Create Massive Value
There are about 800 self-made billionaires in the world. What enables this elite group to create
truly massive value, and what can the rest of us learn from them? John Sviokla and Mitch
Cohen of Pricewaterhouse Coopers set out to answer this question with the first systematic
study of 120 self-made billionaires, including extensive interviews with icons such as Steve
Case, Mark Cuban, and T. Boone Pickens, Jr. The authors conclude that self-made billionaires
aren’t necessarily smarter, harder working, or luckier than their peers. The key difference is
what they call the “producer” mind-set, in contrast to the far more common “performer” mindset. This book offers
fresh insights into producers’ habits of mind. It also provides leaders with a new approach to selecting and
managing breakthrough talent and advice about innovation and value creation for aspiring entrepreneurs.

THE MORAL CASE FOR FOSSIL FUELS
Nov. 2014
The difference between a healthy environment and an unhealthy one can be summed up in
one word, and it’s not climate. It’s development. Alex Epstein argues that the overwhelming
benefits of energy use have been missing from the current debate on fossil fuels.
Environmentalists have stigmatized oil as detrimental to the planet, ignoring the fact that large
amounts of energy allow for development: the improvement of nature to meet human needs.
Epstein offers a largely unheard voice to advocate for fossil fuels and to remove the stigma
from oil. Alex Epstein is president and founder of the Center for Industrial Progress.

HOW ADAM SMITH CAN CHANGE YOUR LIFE: An Unexpected Guide to Human Nature and
Happiness
Adam Smith’s The Wealth of Nations, published in 1776, remains a pillar of the economics
curriculum even today, while his other book, The Theory of Moral Sentiments (1759), is often
ignored. But that earlier book actually changed economist Russ Roberts’ life: It’s the best howto book he’s ever read, and he thinks it’ll change your life, too. Here Roberts spares you the
daunting challenge of reading Smith’s daunting tome. He has devised an ingenious way to
“channel” Smith and teach how to live a more thoughtful, virtuous, and happy life—on a course charted by Adam
Smith 250 years ago. Russ Roberts is a research fellow at Stanford University’s Hoover Institution and the host of
the EconTalk podcast. His YouTube videos on the ideas of Keynes and Hayek have been viewed over 6.2 million

THE INTUITIVE PARENT: Why the Best Thing for Your Child Is You
May 2015
Stephen Camarata draws on academic literature, case studies, and experiences with his own patients and children
to argue for a return to instinct-driven parenting. Developmental milestones are misleading. Earlier is not
necessarily better. And the best thing you can do to make sure your kid grows up functional are almost always lowcost, routine activities such as playing “peek-a-boo,” reading books aloud, talking to them, feeding them, and
otherwise engaging in meeting their everyday needs. This is the true “magic” that ultimately wires a child’s brain
and helps them to develop into intelligent, confident, curious, and talented adults. Camarata aims to debunk
myths about children’s health and mental development and to inoculate parents and empower them to recognize
irrational fears and incredible claims that increase worry, steal their cash, and generally diminish the enjoyment
they would normally derive from parenting. Camarata is a Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and a
Professor of Hearing and Speech Sciences at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine

SHOCKED: Adventures in Bringing Back the Recently Dead
Aug. 2014
Not long ago, when you were dead, you were really, truly dead. But a little electricity, applied
to the heart in just the right way, has changed all that. In Shocked, Dr. David Casarett, a highly
respected professor of medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, embarks on a journey to
find out how the science of resuscitation is changing the way we think about life and death. His
travels take him inside a multi-million-dollar cryonics facility in the Arizona desert, into a
darkroom full of hibernating lemurs in North Carolina, and to an impromptu meeting of a
“back from the dead” club in a Pittsburgh bar. Along the way, he introduces us to scientists who are steadily
extending the boundaries of what is possible, entrepreneurs who have placed a price tag on our desire for
resurrection, and a wide assortment of patients and others whose lives have been changed—for better or for
worse—by a little jolt of electricity. Fascinating, thought-provoking, humorous, and unsettling, Shocked takes on
questions of life and death with a light touch and a broad perspective. David Casarett is the author of Last Acts.

Does medical marijuana really work? Or does it just make people feel good? In Stoned, David Casarett, a highly
respected researcher and professor of medicine, sets out to find answers firsthand. He visits dispensaries in
California and Colorado (and finds out just how easy it is to get access to legal marijuana); he smears mysterious
marijuana paste on his legs while trekking the mountains of Nepal; he samples pot wine and learns about how
vaporizers work; and he convinces an artisanal hash-maker to teach him to make the purest kind of hash, known as
“shatter.” As Casarett interacts with the people who grow, prescribe, sell, and use marijuana, he offers a lighthearted and much-needed medical practitioner’s perspective on what marijuana is really good for. Casarett is the
author of Shocked and Last Acts.

Aug. 2014
THE END OF ABSENCE: Reclaiming What We’ve Lost in a World of Constant Connection
Michael Harris expresses the singular experience of living through the greatest technological
translation of this age. We could describe the “straddle generation”—the people who know life
before and after the rise of the Internet—as, roughly, any person born before 1980. Now, we
wonder at the presence of information and the access to anything we fancy, but we rarely stop
to consider what we’ve given up in exchange for such constant connectedness. Popular
opinion is that technology has improved our lives, but what exactly have we lost? The End of
Absence focuses on the experience of losing a quality of absence in our lives—in other words, the experience of
being flooded by constant connection. When online life so wholly takes over our daily experience, what invisible
things begin to drop away? Because here’s the thing about losing absence: Once you’ve lost it, it’s very, very
difficult to recall its value. Michael Harris is a contributing editor at Western Living and Vancouver magazine.

THE COMBAT-READY KITCHEN
Aug. 2015
It’s a little-known fact that the US military is behind much of the science used in creating processed foods. Here,
food writer Anastacia Marx de Salcedo teases out the who, what, when and why of these military origins. The
Army’s influence on the American diet can be traced back to World War II, when government, universities and
businesses collaborated to develop and produce combat rations that were cheap, imperishable and easy to store
and transport. The same companies then turned around and sold knock-offs to the commercial market. That
system continues to this day. It’s a good deal for both sides: conglomerates get exclusive patents or a head-start
on the next breakthrough technology; the Department of Defense ensures that it has suppliers that can step up
should there ever be another mad scramble to make millions of rations. And for consumers, who eat this food—
originally designed for soldiers on the battlefield—day in, day out, year after year? We’re the guinea pigs in a giant
public health experiment, one in which science and technology, at the beck of the military, have taken over our
kitchens.

RETHINKING POSITIVE THINKING: Inside the New Science of Motivation
Oct. 2014
Rethinking Positive Thinking draws on twenty years of research in the science of motivation to
explore a single, surprising idea: The obstacles that we think most impede us from realizing
our deepest wishes can actually hasten their fulfillment. Often we are bombarded with the
advice to “think positively.” Yet, as psychologist Gabriele Oettingen’s research shows,
dreamers are not often doers. A better way to visualize our future is through “mental
contrasting,” wherein we focus on our dreams but also visualize the barriers that prevent us
from achieving them. By simply adding realism to positive imaginings of the future, people are better able to
achieve their goals. Those who have applied mental contrasting have become significantly more motivated to quit
cigarettes, lose weight, get better grades, sustain healthier relationships, and negotiate more effectively in
business. Oettingen applies mental contrasting to three key areas of personal change—becoming healthier,
nurturing better relationships, and performing better at work—and offers advice on how to get started with this
method. Gabriele Oettingen is a professor of social and developmental psychology at New York University.

ARRIVAL OF THE FITTEST: Solving Evolution’s Greatest Puzzle
Oct. 2014
Darwin’s theory of natural selection explains what happens once innovations arise—to
preserve and propagate those adaptations that are helpful. But it doesn’t tell us how those
innovations come to be in the first place. In the absence of a good explanation, we’ve
defaulted to attributing evolutionary change to random trial and error, but even Darwin
acknowledged that accident was not a very satisfying answer. Integrating recent knowledge
with more traditional Darwinian thinking, Andreas Wagner shows how adaptations are driven
not by chance, but rather by a set of laws. These laws operate at the most fundamental level and can be
understood to drive ancient innovations such as photosynthesis as well as much more modern ones, like the
proteins that allow certain fish to survive in the cold Arctic waters. Arrival of the Fittest offers a new account of
where innovations in nature come from. This provocative and original work begins to answer some of evolution’s
oldest questions. Andreas Wagner is professor in the Institute of Evolutionary Biology and Environmental Studies
at the University of Zurich.
