Academic Vocabulary 5
1. process – (count noun) a series of actions that are done in order to achieve a particular result
Doing your homework will really help your English learning process.
2. research – (noncount noun) a serious study of a subject, in order to discover new facts or test
new ideas
New research shows that we can no longer stop climate change. Researchers now say we
have to move from stopping it to adapting to it.
3. significant – (adjective) having an important effect or influence, OR large enough to be
noticeable or have noticeable effects [significance = noun] [opposite = insignificant]
A significant number of drivers fail to drive the speed limit. This is causing a lot of pedestrian
deaths.
4. appropriate – (adjective) correct or suitable for a particular time, situation, or purpose
[opposite = inappropriate]
It’s important to wear appropriate clothes and to act appropriately when you have a job
interview.
5. conclude– (verb) decide that something is true after considering all the information you have
President Obama concluded that the best way to help West Africa was to send troops to help
aid workers dealing with Ebola.
6. distinct – (adjective) clearly different or belonging to a different type [adverb = distinctly]
The learning needs of citizenship students and credit students are very distinct.
7. evaluate – (verb) judge how good, useful, or successful something is [noun = evaluation]
Every year my boss evaluates my work during my annual job review.
8. final – (adjective) last in a series of actions, events, parts of a story [adverb = finally]
The final episode of my favorite TV show airs tonight at 8:00.
9. item – (count noun) a single thing, especially one thing in a list, group, or set of things
The store sells kitchen appliances and household items.
10. journal – (count noun) a serious magazine produced for professional people or those with a
particular interest OR a written record that you make of the things that happen to you each da
