Announcements:
October 11th is listed in your Blue Book as a PLC day. This is not accurate. School will begin at the regular time on
Tuesday, October 11th.
This is a gentle reminder that the signed Acknowledgement page of the Bluebook is due to the front office. If you
have not sent this in to Tom Greer, please do so now. It means tearing out the front page of the Blue Book, filling it out, and
sending it to Tom. His Fax number is 317/543-5050 attn. Tom Greer, or it can be mailed to him at 5225E56th Street,
Indianapolis, IN 46226.
Lost: Dillon Paul lost his $6,000 hearing aids. Please check around school to see if you see them. They are in a
small grey case about the same size and shape as a small cell phone-about 2” x 3” and probably 1 ½ to 2 “ thick. It has the
3
word Phonik on it. Insurance will not cover the replacement of these. Please look around school, ask your children to
check, and let’s see if we can return them to Dillon.
Parents: There is still time to participate in the magazine sale. The collection days
for late orders that will count towards the free day are: Thursday, October 6,
Thursday, October 13, Tuesday, October 18, and the final day - Tuesday, October
25. We still are $75,000 short of the total school goal for a free day for everyone. QSP.com
is busiest in the morning and if you get an error message, please try again later in the day.

PICTURE RETAKE DAY will be held next Tuesday, Oct. 11, from 7:30 a.m. to 3:20 p.m. in the Welch Center lobby.
Students wishing to be photographed on that day should go to the Welch lobby during a resource period or other convenient
time.
It is very important that any student who was not photographed on orientation day in August have a picture taken
on retake day. This is for the student’s ID and yearbook picture (underclassmen). ID’s are needed for free entrance to
games and theater productions and will also be scanned at some events to count toward County points. Those being
photographed for the first time should pick up an order form in the front office and come to the photographer with payment
for any pictures you would like to order. If you do not want to order pictures, no order form is necessary and there is no
charge.
Those wishing retakes must bring the original packet of pictures to the shoot and return them to the photographer
before being re-photographed.
Students being photographed on retake day may dress up but must dress modestly.

Cathedral’s 1:1 technology program will feature iPad2 technology
Sept. 28, 2011
Indianapolis, Ind. — Cathedral High School President Stephen J. Helmich announced today that when Cathedral
moves to campus-wide 1:1 technology in the Fall of 2012, they will do so with a device billed as a transformational
educational tool: the iPad2.
“We weighed opportunity, versatility and functionality with price, accessibility and support and there’s no question that the
iPad2 gives us the greatest flexibility and offers the greatest potential for growth,” Helmich said. “When I think about this
program, I think about the opportunities for even greater student engagement and for our educators to explore new heights
of creativity in their teaching.”
The move comes after more than four years of research and planning by Cathedral faculty and administrators working in
concert with parents and students, and with an infrastructure commitment that to date totals an estimated $1 million, said
Rolly Landeros, chief information officer. And unlike some other schools’ iPad-based 1:1 initiatives, Cathedral students and
teachers will have the opportunity to customize their device for learning and instruction that is uniquely personalized.
“This tool becomes immediately educationally impactful,” said Julie Barthel, director of professional development at
Cathedral. “We’re not going to limit our teachers and students and say they can only have a handful of apps. Instead, we
want our students and teachers to explore the countless resources that are available, not only through hundreds of
educational apps, but through other digital learning resources, including for instance podcasts or lectures from major
universities.”
Moreover, Barthel said within those apps and resources exist ways in which students can further customize their content
to fit their individual learning styles and needs. One example Barthel gave was in an English class, where different students
reading the same book would want to customize their vocabulary words, perhaps access part of the novel through an
audiobooks app, or get assistance on understanding themes or storylines through projects or work completed at
universities.
“The iPad2 offers teachers an opportunity to manipulate material and differentiate instruction in a way that’s never before
been available,” Barthel said. “This personalization is a complete game changer — it will revolutionize education.”
And because faculty members were given their iPads this fall, they will have had their devices for an entire school year by
the time iPads are issued to students. That means Cathedral teachers will have had the opportunity to work on the apps to
write curriculum, and collaborate across departments and across disciplines, in an effort to insure the greatest return for
families’ investments.
Other benefits to the iPad2 include the ability for families to access e-Books and other digital material as it becomes
available from textbook publishers, reducing the physical weight young people must carry in backpacks and bookbags.
What’s more, the long battery life for the device — approximately eight to 10 hours — and the durability of the equipment,
make it a great fit for active high school students. Classrooms and common areas such as the media center will be
equipped with charging stations, and on-site help from the school’s technology department will be made available as well.
Administrators will work with vendors to attempt to provide competitive pricing for the device, though details will not be
available until a later date.
Cathedral will continue to maintain its nine fixed computer labs and seven mobile laptop labs. Students will also be allowed
7
to continue to bring personal laptops to school, though those devices will not replace the need for an iPad2 for students in
Grades 9-11. Seniors during the 2012-13 school year will not be required to have the device.
More information for families will be available during a question-and-answer session set from 7 to 8:30 p.m.,
Thursday, Oct. 13 in the Shiel Student Life Center Commons.
“We just can’t say enough how excited we are to finally be bringing years of work and research to fruition,” said David L.
Worland, principal. “It has been said that this will change the face of education at Cathedral, not in terms of rigor or
expectations, but relative to growth and possibility. This is a truly historic time for Cathedral, and we’re so very pleased
to make it a reality for our students.”

The National Finals Competition will take place on March 22-23 in National Harbor, Maryland (Washington,
DC). For the teams that qualify to compete in the National Finals, it is an “all expensive paid” trip (see below). It
might as well be Cathedral!
FROM THE FAQ (with my comments): There is an entry fee of $350 per team (however, with a little help from our
friends, the cost to each CHS Student is only $20). This entry fee covers all direct costs, including
transportation, food, and lodging for teams qualifying for the in-person competitions. The fee also provides
for access to licenses for Microsoft Academic Alliance Developer software package (STUDENTS get access to use,
on their own machines, lots of different Operating Systems and Development Software) and participant kits (shirts,
certificates, etc.) for up to ten competitors.
However, you must act NOW.

Anyone wishing to make a contribution/donation (notes of support, words of encouragement, prayers, books, CDs,
gift cards, etc.) to support a member of the Cathedral family who was injured on campus last week, can drop them
off at the Cathedral HS Front Desk.
 A request to create a central means of providing support to the student and family was made by a parent after last
week’s prayer service. A Cathedral Mothers’ Club representative will pick up items on a regular basis and deliver them
directly to the family.
 The Cathedral Parents’ Prayer offers thanks for the solid structure of our school that provides a caring and nurturing
environment and Our Shared Values include putting the interest of others before our own.
Parents: the roundabout is not a location to drop off or pick up students at any time during the
day, including after sports’ practices in the late afternoon/evening. We ask that you please not park
there unless you are visiting the school during the regular school day. This non-parking request includes
pick-up from after school activities. The roundabout is designed to keep traffic flowing in all directions.
When cars are parked there it impedes the ability of the roundabout to accomplish this. We thank you
for your help.

Developmental Assets Meetings:
Dear Parent of a Freshman:
I hope that your school year has started well for both you and your student. I also am aware that there are many
activities and events that surround your life. But I want to invite you to an hour long session at one of the times listed
below. The purpose for our meeting is to inform you about the philosophy of developing assets among our teenagers.
You will receive useful information. You will meet other parents.
The theory behind the development of assets is simple: the more good things or assets one
has the less chance someone will engage in liabilities or risky behavior. The research has
shown that if we all work together in developing these assets then there is less chance that
students will develop life- long risk taking behaviors.
I know that you are busy. I promise only to take one hour. You need attend only one of the
sessions listed below. I hope to see you at one of these. It is not necessary to RSVP.
Here are the times, dates and locations:
Tuesday, October 11 - 9:00 AM - Baker Board Room
Wednesday, October 12 - 7:00PM - Commons
Wednesday, October 19 - 7:00PM - Commons
Respectfully,
Dr. Tom Greer

Wednesday, October 12th will be a very busy day for all Cathedral Students:

Freshmen will have their Freshman retreat all day here on campus

Sophomores and Juniors will take the PSAT test
The PSAT/NMSQT (Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test) will be administered Weds, Oct 12th
for all Cathedral High School sophomores and juniors. The PSAT helps students prepare for the SAT and serves as a
National Merit Scholarship Qualifying opportunity for juniors. Students should arrive to school at the regular start time
dressed in uniform with a calculator and number 2 pencils. No electronic devices, books or other materials are allowed
in the testing rooms. Students will be dismissed around 10:30-11:00am unless they use extended time. Students with
extended time will be dismissed between 11:30am – noon. Students and parents can find more details about format,
resources and practice questions at www.collegeboard.com

Seniors are advised to plan ahead and set up a college visit for this day. Parents, this means that you go with
your senior to visit a college for a pre-planned visit with an admissions counselor. You would be wise to take
your child’s transcript with you for the visit. Sometimes it is possible to sit in on a class or two with your child in his/her
area of interest. Please do not allow a group of seniors to go together with no parental supervision, since often this
means that they visit the grill, chat with students, and do no more for their college search than this.

Service Outreach News:
The spirit of our service will be guided by Matt 25:35-36: “I was hungry and you gave me food. I was thirsty and you gave
me drink, I was naked and you clothed me. I was homeless and you gave to shelter. I was ill and you came to see me.”
“I was always in your presence; you were holding me by my right hand.” Ps 73. We are invited to joyously delight in God’s
being through prayer and service. He is our refuge and our joy; may our good works draw us closer to Him in reflection and
understanding. Let us be set us afire with love. May we genuinely share our delight and love for our Lord in our
courageous work, wisdom and humility.

Class Service Projects Class service projects in October become perfect service opportunities for off-season sport
groups and families. Details on all of these class service projects are noted below in Service Opportunities. By supporting
these class projects on Saturday, Oct 8 at the Cathedral Soup Kitchen (10:30-1:30), and on Wednesday, Oct 12 at Anna’s
House (4:00 PM-7:30 PM), we become a unified force of hospitable Irish generosity in the community.
Our freshman will be asked to bring a toy and/or socks for the Catholic Charities Christmas Store on Wednesday, October
12, 2011 for the Freshman Day of Recollection. Watch for the informative flyer that they will receive in their theology class.
NOLA Our fall mission trip to New Orleans represents our fourth trip to the Gulf area to help with post-Katrina reconstruction
and community projects from Oct 26 to Oct 31. We are seeking men and women with construction abilities to join us in this
trip so that we can create forms for copings in Holt Cemetery and perform remodel work in the Lower Ninth Ward. Please
contact Mrs. Halstead with your ability and interest in accompanying us. Our valiant and committed sixty students need
your construction leadership to complete their good work on this trip which offers wonderful outreach in a city riddled with
poverty still needing assistance.
Youth Leadership Initiative Board for United Way. Freshman, sophomores or juniors are invited to participate on the
Youth Leadership Initiative Board. Applications are due on November 4 and information about requirements and
responsibilities may be viewed at this United Way link. Contact Meaghan Searight with questions about her involvement in
this board during her junior year.
Service Hours on Power School Normally, service hours may be viewed on Power School. They are
current for all hours received since the start of school. For the 2011-12 academic year, service hours for
seniors are due December 1, 2011 to meet their total graduation requirement. For the academic year of
2011-12, freshmen, sophomore and junior hours are due March 1, 2012. The service hours for all students
will be shown on their fourth quarter report card. If the hours for this year are completed by April 1, hours
earned after April 1 may be credited to the next year’s requirement. We are accepting service on a project
basis as well. After Sep 1, hours will not be accepted more than sixty days after the date of service
performance.

have other problems with the linked documents, please proceed to the website to access links from the Service
Opportunities area
under On Campus/Service Outreach.
Please continue to turn to the most compelling areas of need to perform your service stewardship. Thank you for
supporting your class service projects with enthusiasm and compassion. Should you desire to pursue an outreach project
with an agency not listed, you may also consult the list of service agencies available by clicking here. By working with
diligence and interest on your service, you should find yourself achieving about four hours of service each
month. The balance of 2011 and 2012 provides rich opportunities to direct helpful hands and hearts to aid our community
needs.
Service hours for freshmen, sophomore and junior students for the academic year of 2011-12 are due on March 1,
2012. Seniors graduation hours for the academic year of 2011-2012 are due on December 1, 2011. Click here for
the 2011-12 Service Documentation. Click here for the 2011-12 Service Documentation form. Click here for the
Service Hour Criteria. Hours will not be accepted more than sixty days after the date of service performance.
Please check the service criteria because neighbor help, family help and working for a business without pay is not
accepted as service hours. We always encourage our students to help their families and neighbors but we do not
accept these efforts as service hours. We seek to perform our service in the spirit of Matthew 25:35-36.

IHSAA Student-Athlete Tip of the Week (10-3-11): "Promoting education-based athletics in Indiana"
Do you know the rules of your sport? Are you aware of any rule changes from last year? Does your coach go over
the changes with you?
In last year's PGA Championship, professional golfer Dustin Johnson was eliminated from a playoff because of a rules
violation. He was aware of the rule but interpreted it incorrectly during the last hole of the match.
While your high school coaches are there to help you with the rules, it's your responsibility as a student-athlete to
know them and how to apply them. Be sure you know the critical rules of your sport. It can only benefit you and
your team!

Offer from DentalWorks for Student-Athletes:
To the parents of Cathedral Athletes,
DentalWorks would like to offer FREE custom Athletic Mouth Guards to all athletes attending Cathedral
High School! We have stocked your team colors and can make them for each player. It’s simple! All you need to
do is call for an appointment, arrive with your students, and sign a parent consent form for the impressions.
The advantage of a custom fit mouth guard as compared to a store-bought mouth guard is monumental. Our mouth
guards provide the comfort and safety your athlete needs to stay in the game! The impression process is relatively
quick and your athlete will be able to pick up the finished product in no time. For those athletes currently in
orthodontics, due to the constant movement of your teeth, this type of guard will not work until braces are removed,
however we do offer a standard guard in a variety of colors available for you as well.

At DentalWorks, we are dedicated to your family’s health needs and to serving our community. We are
conveniently located in the Castleton Square Mall, in the Sears Store on the 2nd floor. Doctors Gary Barth, Sonia
Alex, Neil Pinney and Russell Guymon along with their team offer a full range of family dentistry and orthodontics.
We have early morning and late evening appointments to accommodate your scheduling needs.

Echoes for Athletes Program – Monday, October 17, 2011
Eligibility:
Student Athletes enrolled at Cathedral High School in grades 9 – 12 are welcome to participate. Those under 18
must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
What is the Cost?
The screenings are $20 per student payable by cash or check at the time of registration. Please make
checks payable to Heart Partners of Indiana.
Why should student athletes be screened?
This type of cardiovascular screening is designed to detect structural abnormalities like
HOCM (Hypertrophic Obstructive cardiomyopathy), Aortic Stenosis, Marfan’s Syndrome,
and Mitral Valve Prolapse. Although rare, some of these issues can be potentially fatal.
Detailed information about these conditions can be found at echoesforathletes.com. If
studies taken at these events reveal possible abnormalities, we endorse a complete cardiovascular examination
and follow up with your personal physician. Please understand that this screening should not be used in lieu of
cardiac testing if ordered by a physician.
What is involved?
This is a non-invasive procedure utilizing ultrasound to capture digital photos and measurements of the heart. The
entire process should take less than 20 minutes. We do recommend that girls wear sports bras, and advocate for
parental presence in the exam room.

Boys and Girls Soccer:
The Cathedral girls pose with their City championship trophy. The Irish scored all four goals in Wednesday's
first 18 minutes. /
Written by Chris Nelsen, Star correspondent
Cathedral High School girls soccer coach Marc Behringer doesn't expect a gift basket from the other teams in
the annual City tournament. Considering the Irish's dominance, that seems like a fair assumption.
"If I were in their shoes, I'd be sick and tired of Cathedral winning the
championship," Behringer said after Wednesday's 4-0 victory over Bishop
Chatard in the final. "I'm sure their players and coaches aren't very happy."
The Irish (12-3-1), ranked fifth in Class 2A, have won the girls title 13 of 14
years. Chatard claimed the championship in 2004.
"We've had a good run for a number of years, but who knows how long that'll be the case," Behringer said. "When
you have the opportunity to win, you really need to take advantage. With all due respect to those other teams, we
really enjoy the City tournament."
Although it would be easy for the Irish to take the tournament for granted, senior Jasmine Whitaker couldn't
disagree more. Whitaker had a goal and two assists in Wednesday's game at Heritage Christian.
"I would love to have a competitive game, but we also played really well," she said. "It's an awesome thing to win
City every year, and we're always excited. The City tournament has always been dominated by Cathedral, and we
don't want that streak to end."
The Irish certainly didn't lack motivation against Chatard (9-4-3). Cathedral scored two goals in the opening six
minutes of the first half and four goals in the opening 18 minutes. Sophomore Julia Kahn had two goals and an
assist, while senior Megan Short added a goal and assist.
"This game was exactly what our team needed," Whitaker said. "This really showed we're a strong team and a
contender to win the state title."
The Irish completed their regular season. They play Lawrence Central in a sectional opener at 5 p.m. Oct. 6.
Lawrence North and North Central play in the other sectional semifinal.
In the boys City final, Cathedral completed the sweep with a 4-0 victory over Cardinal Ritter. It was the Irish's third
consecutive title and 11th in 14 years.
"I wasn't sure what to expect with the wet conditions and the small field," Cathedral coach Paul
Schroeder said. "I think Ritter came out a little on their heels and a little defensive. We were
able to take advantage of that."
The Irish (10-2-4) received goals from seniors Nick Lang and Brett Reuschhoff and juniors E.J.
Moore and Julian Gonzalez.
For Ritter (9-4-3), it was the program's first time in the City final.
"We were very excited to be here," Raiders coach Bashir Birany said. "Give credit to Cathedral; they are a very
good team. Obviously, we would have loved to win it."

Quote from Father Basil Moreau, founder of the Holy Cross Congregation.
The perfection of this life stands out particularly in that purity of intention which seeks not self, but
God alone; aims only at heaven and not at anything earthly; strives for nothing but the happiness of
possessing Jesus and belonging to Him and to His beloved mother; and directs all interests, goods and
rights to the sole honor of the Divine Master and the salvation of souls.

Meditation: Jonah 4:1-11
“At dawn God sent a worm which attacked the plant, so that it withered.” (Jonah 4:7)
Today’s first reading shows us a petulant Jonah complaining because God has decided not to punish his enemies.
After running away from God rather than deliver a message to the hated Ninevites, Jonah changes his mind and
goes to Nineveh. He’s happy to proclaim the imminent destruction of the wicked city. But to his dismay, these
pagans actually believe him and repent. So sincere is their repentance that God does not destroy them but forgives
them instead. Jonah loses his focus and gets disgusted. How can God possibly love these wretches?
32
In a telling parable, a shade plant grows up rapidly to give Jonah shelter, but he fails to recognize this as a sign of God’s
love for him. What’s more, he certainly doesn’t expand his vision to understand that God also loves the people of Nineveh.
So God makes sure that Jonah’s relief from the heat is short-lived. A worm soon attacks the plant and destroys it.
Sometimes we too find it difficult to agree with God’s mercy toward those we regard as enemies, either because of their
wicked behavior or simply because they fall outside our comfortable circle. If we are honest with ourselves, we may be able
to identify the “worms” that gnaw at us and separate us from God’s merciful outlook. Like Jonah, those worms may include
narrow-minded attitudes, unforgiveness, or a punitive spirit. Or we may be subject to other feelings like resentment,
bitterness, a critical spirit, or a guilty conscience. And let’s not forget how frustration and confusion can disturb our spirits
and make it hard for us to hear God’s voice.
Spend a little time examining your conscience for “worms” like these. When you identify one, don’t linger there. Instead,
surrender it immediately to the Lord. Ask him to brush it away and restore your focus on him.
As you examine your heart, be sure not to get down on yourself. God loves you just as you are. Immerse yourself in his
great mercy. Receive his forgiveness, just as the Ninevites did. And extend that mercy to others, just as Jonah eventually
learned to do.
“Father, you love me and all the people you have put on this earth. Plunge me into your love, and help me to share that love
with everyone around me.”
Blessings,
Principal
