The introduction of four new professional units from 2016 was intended to synthesise and harmonise the delivery of professional placements across the courses and enable more efficient and effective delivery. RESOLVED - 166/15 to recommend to the Academic Council that the proposed changes and associated new units SOC5101, SOCS5102, SOCS5103, SOCS5104 (where relevant) as set out in the attachments to the 24 November circular, for: 79 File Ref: F68752 12530 Master of Heritage Studies (coursework and dissertation) 11580 Master of International Relations (coursework or coursework and dissertation) 12510 Master of Professional Archaeology (coursework and dissertation) 12540 Master of Strategic Communication (coursework or coursework and dissertation) 12340 Graduate Diploma in Strategic Communication; and 11590 Master of International Journalism (coursework or coursework and dissertation) 71550 Master of International Development (coursework or coursework and dissertation) be approved for offering from 2016. 1.2. PROPOSALS FOR NEW UNIVERSITY PRIZES Members noted that in accordance with the University Policy on Prizes the Curriculum Committee was responsible for the establishment, amendment or rescission of undergraduate prizes for pass or honours degree courses. The following prize conditions had been received from the Prizes Unit and the Committee was asked to consider and establish these prizes: 2.1. PRIZE FOR OUTSTANDING ACHIEVEMENT IN AN UNDERGRADUATE PROFESSIONAL DEGREE - F76467 Members considered the proposed prize conditions for the Prize for Outstanding Achievement in an Undergraduate Professional Degree, copies of which were attached to the circular. Members noted that in accordance with the University Policy on Prizes, this prize would be offered on an annual basis for five years and would, unless renegotiated, be offered until 2020 to the 2019 cohort of students. As part of its deliberations, a member queried whether the prize for professional degrees should also include the new professional courses such as MPE, JD, DMD, and MD. It was noted, however, that the intent of this prize was for pre-2012 courses that were being taught out and were, therefore, at the undergraduate level not the postgraduate level. The donor was keen to acknowledge students completing the pre-2012 undergraduate courses. Further clarification had also been sought and received from the Prizes Unit and it was noted that the Prizes Unit, in consultation with the School of Indigenous Studies, would review such prizes as the student cohorts change due to the transition from pre to new 2012 courses to ensure that the prize continues to be competitive and awardable. RESOLVED – 168/15 that the Curriculum Committee approve: (i) the establishment of the Prize for Outstanding Achievement in an Undergraduate Professional Degree in accordance with the prize conditions as attached to the circular; (ii) the management of the Prize for Outstanding Achievement in an Undergraduate Professional Degree by the School of Indigenous Studies; and (iii) the awarding of the Prize for Outstanding Achievement in an Undergraduate Professional Degree for the first time in 2016 to the 2015 academic year. 80 File Ref: F68752 2.2. PRIZES FOR OUTSTANDING ACHIEVEMENT IN THE FOUR BACHELORS DEGREES OF ARTS, SCIENCE, COMMERCE AND DESIGN – FILE REFS F76473, F76474, F76475 Members considered the proposed prize conditions for three prizes which had been attached to the agenda, namely: Prize for Outstanding Achievement in the Bachelor of Arts, Prize for Outstanding Achievement in the Bachelor of Science Prize for Outstanding Achievement in the Bachelor of Commerce or Bachelor of Design Members noted that in accordance with the University Policy on Prizes, these prizes would be offered on an annual basis for five years and would, unless renegotiated, be offered until 2020 to the 2019 cohort of students. Feedback was received from a member querying whether it was intended to exclude the Bachelor of Philosophy (Hons) from the three proposed prizes for Outstanding Achievement in the Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, and Bachelors of Commerce and Design. Clarification received from the Prizes Unit indicated that BPhil (Hons) students would have an unfair advantage given the prize would be selected on the highest WAM. It was further noted that the School of Indigenous Studies, as the donor of the awards, would consider alternative modes of acknowledging indigenous BPhil students at the appropriate time, when such students would be graduating (2018). Taking each proposed prize in turn: 2.2.1 Prize for Outstanding Achievement in the Bachelor of Arts – F76473 RESOLVED – 169/15 that the Curriculum Committee approve: (i) the establishment of the Prize for Outstanding Achievement in the Bachelor of Arts in accordance with the prize conditions as attached to the circular; (ii) the management of the Prize for Outstanding Achievement in the Bachelor of Arts by the School of Indigenous Studies; and (iii) the awarding of the Prize for Outstanding Achievement in the Bachelor of Arts for the first time in 2016 to the 2015 academic year. 2.2.2 Prize for Outstanding Achievement in the Bachelor of Science – F76474 RESOLVED – 170/15 that the Curriculum Committee approve: (i) the establishment of the Prize for Outstanding Achievement in the Bachelor of Science in accordance with the prize conditions as attached to the circular; (ii) the management of the Prize for Outstanding Achievement in the Bachelor of Science by the School of Indigenous Studies; and (iii) the awarding of the Prize for Outstanding Achievement in the Bachelor of Science for the first time in 2016 to the 2015 academic year. 2.2.3 Prize for Outstanding Achievement in the Bachelor of Commerce or Bachelor of Design – F76475 RESOLVED – 171/15 that the Curriculum Committee approve: (i) the establishment of the Prize for Outstanding Achievement in the Bachelor of Commerce or Bachelor of Design in accordance with the prize conditions as attached to the circular; 81 File Ref: F68752 (ii) the management of the Prize for Outstanding Achievement in the Bachelor of Commerce or Bachelor of Design by the School of Indigenous Studies; and (iii) the awarding of the Prize for Outstanding Achievement in the Bachelor of Commerce or Bachelor of Design for the first time in 2016 to the 2015 academic year. 82
