National Professional Qualification for Senior Leadership (NPQSL)
Dear Colleagues,
We are pleased to inform you that Billericay Teaching School Alliance are working with Leadership East (a licensee of
the National College for Teaching and Leadership) to facilitate the National Professional Qualification for Senior
Leadership (NPQSL). Following the huge success of our last programme we are delighted to be running another
programme for 2015-2016, facilitated by Alliance Practitioners and delivered in Alliance partner schools locally.
We would like to offer you the opportunity to send one or more of your staff (all phases) on the NPQSL programme
starting this Autumn Term 2015 in the local area. The first introductory twilight will be on 15th October 2015. Please find
booking details and instructions below. Once booked on the programme you will be given access to online materials and
the 360 degree online diagnostic. Ideally the diagnostic will be completed prior to the first introductory twilight.
The chart below will help you to identify who might be eligible for the NPQSL programme, including those more suited
to NPQML. More details about the programme can be found on the Leadership East website www.leadershipeast.org.uk
NPQSL has been developed for leaders who are
leading beyond a team a school or academy,
traditionally associated with senior leadership
roles. NPQSL is suitable for:
 Experienced middle leaders who are
ambitious for and seeking promotion to a
senior leadership role
 Deputy or assistant head
 Specialist Leader of Education (SLE)
 Senior leader in a federation with
responsibility across several schools
 Someone with responsibility for
supporting other schools.
Senior leaders who are not qualified teachers (for
example bursars, HR officers)
NPQML has been developed for those leading a team
within an organisation, traditionally associated with
middle leadership.
NPQML is suitable for staff who:
 have recently taken on a middle leadership role
or a new responsibility
 are more established as middle leaders
 Subject/curriculum leader
 Head of key stage
 Head of department
 Pastoral leaders, for example, head of year or
head of house
 Gifted and talented co-ordinator
 Advanced skills teacher
 Assessment co-ordinator
 Career co-ordinator
Costs - The recommended retail price for the NPQSL programme is £1400 but as a local cluster group we can offer the
programme at the reduced price of £1245 including venue and refreshments costs. All Delegates are eligible to apply to
the National College for a scholarship to reduce the cost still further. We will support in this process as necessary.
Scholarship options are indicated below;

In primary schools with over 250 pupils and secondary schools with over 500 a successful Part-Scholarship
application is worth £118, cost - £1127 per Delegate.*
 Primary schools between 101 and 250 pupils, a 50% Scholarship is worth £630. Cost - £615 per Delegate*
 In primary schools with less than 100 pupils and in secondary schools with less than 500 pupils a Full
Scholarship applies covering the full cost of the programme and there is no charge.*
*(Please note Leadership East will allocate scholarships, often through a sifting panel. In the unlikely event of a
scholarship not being confirmed a Delegate is liable for the full cost of the programme.)
Requirements - Schools will need to ensure they provide a “sponsor” who will support the Delegate as they undertake
their school improvement task and can verify their evidence at assessment. The Delegate will need to be released from
school to attend; 2 twilight introductory sessions, 4 face to face sessions, and 4 twilight sessions.
Commitment - Delegates need to be committed to approximately 200 hours of study (50 hours blended
learning/module), usually spread over 12 months. Delegates must submit evidence for assessment within 18 months of
starting the programme.
