PROFESSOR MAURIZIA CALUSIO
COURSE AIMS
The course provides students with a basic methodological approach to translation
from Russian into Italian and from Italian into Russian.
In addition to the linguistic analysis of texts, students will carry out their own
translations from these texts, with the collaboration and guidance of the lecturer.
COURSE CONTENT
The course will deal with some issues of particular importance in translating from
Russian:
1. archaisms (with examples from works of poetry);
2. realia (i.e. culture-specific lexical items; with particular reference to Soviet-era
prose);
3. particles and speech signals (illustrated using different examples).
4. Verbs nouns (some examples).

TEACHING METHOD
Classroom lectures, practical exercises with lecturer guidance.

COURSE AIMS
The course sets out to refine and polish the student’s linguistic skills, focusing on
written and oral translation and understanding spoken Russian.
COURSE CONTENT
The course is in two parts:
Course of Russian translation and preparation for the Russian oral exam
– Practical translation from Italian to Russian using topical texts.
– Advanced grammar with spoken and written exercises.
– Oral exercises in linguistic mediation.
– Expansion of the professional lexicon.
– Listening exercises to understand spoken texts.
Translation course from Russian into Italian
– Use of syntactic constructions to translate original texts on topical issues
(medium-high level of difficulty).
– Analysis of the morphosyntactic and lexical structure of texts on current affairs,
culture and politics.
READING LIST
Russian language manual for 1LM (Professor Natalia Nikitina – can be purchased from the

TEACHING METHOD
Lectures and practical classes.
ASSESSMENT METHOD
Final written and oral exams, as follows:
Written exam
– Translation from Italian into Russian.
– Translation from Russian into Italian.
– Comprehension of a text read out loud by the teacher and grammar and lexicon test.
The three exams will take four hours.
The student can bring both a bilingual and a monolingual dictionary to the translation
part of the exam.
Oral exam
The student will need to demonstrate that they can hold a conversation in Russian on the
content of a Russian-language book chosen and read by the student independently but
agreed with the lecturer (minimum 150 pages).
