North Avenue, Room 407A AAWatson@bcps.k12.md.us – 443-642-4283 Universal Drills and Evacuations Bus Evacuations Reverse / Alert Status Secure facility by locking all doors from the inside. Do not chain any doors. Inform staff of “Alert Status.” Post staff near the front entrance of the building to allow entrance and exit with identification. Conduct classes and activities within the building in a normal manner. Drivers should have step-by-step procedures, which include alternatives for different scenarios and for special needs populations. Make sure students have been instructed about what to do and how to proceed. Make sure bus assistants have been instructed about what to do and how to proceed. Universal Drills and Evacuations Drop, Cover, and Hold (earthquake) Caption describing picture or graphic. Drop to the floor, take cover under a nearby desk or table and face away from the windows. Cover your eyes by leaning your face against your arms. Hold onto the table or desk legs, and maintain present location/position. Evacuate building following evacuation guidelines. If outdoors, move away from building, overhead electrical wires, and utility poles. Lie flat, face down and wait for shocks to subside. Fire Drills Take the closet and safest way out as posted (use secondary route if primary route is blocked or hazardous). Always take roll books for student and staff accounting. Assist those needing special assistance. Do not stop for student/staff belongings. Go to Designated Assembly Area(s). Take attendance; report according to Student Accounting and Release procedures using Emergency Attendance protocols. Wait for further instructions. If on bus, stay on bus. Driver should stop quickly and safely away from overpasses and bridges. Lockdown Students are to be cleared from halls and to report to nearest available classroom. Close and lock all doors and windows; do not leave for any reason. Cover all room and door windows. Stay away from doors and windows. Move students to interior walls and sit on floor. Shut off lights. Be quiet! Wait for further instructions. Severe Weather Safe Area (Other than earthquake) Take the closest, safest route to shelter. Occupants of portable classrooms should move to the main building. Remain in safe area until the “all clear” is given.
