Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 2002 (C.O.S.H.H)
In accordance with regulations it is intended to avoid the use of hazardous substances wherever
possible, negating the need to conduct C.O.S.H.H assessments. Bognor House Day Nursery follows
C.O.S.H.H (Control of Substances Hazardous to Health) to ensure safety at all times. Where this is not
possible and a hazardous substance has to be used a COSHH assessment will be conducted first to
decide the necessary personal protective equipment, safe systems of work and first aid procedures. We
ensure all products that we are listed in our C.O.S.H.H assessment inventory. Every product we use has
been risk assessed and a completed C.O.S.H.H assessment sheet to reduce and illuminate risks of using
these products. All products are kept in their original containers and are stored following manufactures
guidelines.
All toxic substances, including cleaning materials are kept well out of children’s reach in the kitchen
and storage shed area where children are not allowed nor have access.
Pest Control
At Bognor House Day Nursery our pest control contractors are I.D.M Environmental Services Pest
Control and Prevention. Our contractor visits the premises every month to every other month. Our bait
boxes are safe to have on the premises and hidden from the children. Staff members know what the
boxes look like and where they are located. We have safety data sheets from I.D.M on the products
used. We also have a record of Liability Insurance, contractors DBS and Qualifications. Contractors are
supervised by a member of senior staff whilst on the premises. If any boxes are active I.D.M will visit one
to twice a week until problem is illuminated. (also see risk assessments)
Handling Clinical Waste
Staff may occasionally have to deal with body fluids and wastes during the normal course of their work,
for example vomit and faeces / urine which may fall within the scope of the COSHH regulations. All
employees who may handle clinical waste will be trained in safe procedures and in dealing with
spillages. Protective gloves, aprons and masks are provided for staff use.
Further details on C.O.S.H.H can be found on www.HSE.co.uk web page.
