Special Order: Tenure Presentation – Dr. Harknett
Thank you for having me. It’s important to have this type of student
input in the governance of running the University.
Tenure is something you should be concerned about. Make sure it is
working in your interest. It allows faculty to take risks. Engine for innov ation.
It is unique to Universities, and cannot be replicated elsewhere in society.
Tenure allows faculty to focus on innovation, without the fear of failure. The
utility of tenure is that it takes away the caution present elsewhere in society.
The risk-taking aspect of tenure is understated, but important to the overall
function of the practice.
Tenure process. RPT documents. Get reviewed after one year.
Tenure track faculty will either get accepted as tenured faculty or face
termination the following year. Although it varies department to department,
teaching evaluations are sometimes given equal weight with research.
However, academic concerns about the biased nature of teaching evaluations
have most likely lessened the credibility of this grading factor.
RPT- Reappointment, Promotion, and Tenure. Reappointment after a
year and a half. Promotions move candidates along the track. These
documents are available to the public.
Most likely reason to reject a tenure candidate is inadequate
publication record. 20 years ago, research had the biggest draw. Balance has
come since then.

President Smith – I don’t want to open up the floodgates to
conference fees.
LEAP Presentation – Part of SSC. Recent Events Pick UP American,

conference in Washington, D.C. There will be an Ohio state “break
out,” and we will work on statewide issues. Asking for $5,000.00 from
UFB, but there is a $50.00 registration fee for the conference. The
group is a diverse group of students. SG should help us go there.

more conferences.
