Welcome and SU Budget Outlook – Dr. Janet Dudley-Eshbach, President o President Dudley-Eshbach welcomed everyone to the meeting and provided updates on the budget and furlough situation. o Governor O’Malley is pressing forward with plans for Capital Budget projects. Some cuts will be made, but the continuation of these projects will generate an economic stimulus by creating jobs. The campus community is reminded that capital budget funding is separate from operations funding, and money cannot be transferred between the two. Programs at Shady Grove / Distance Learning – Dr. Robert Tardiff o There are many less populated areas in the State of Maryland where potential college students do not have a local institution where they could earn a four-year degree. Salisbury University, as well as other four-year institutions in Maryland, have risen to the challenge and offer degrees in five satellite sites in Maryland; located in Hagerstown, Elkton, Wye Mills, and Shady Grove. Degrees, such as Bachelor of Arts PAT Meeting December 11, 2008 Page 2 in Elementary Education and in Social Work, as well as Masters of Arts degrees in Education, in Social Work, and in Business Administration are available at some of these locations. While most classes are taught by instructors from the home institution, the uniqueness of some of these programs is the use of IVN, an interactive teaching devise that allows students to listen and see professors from a separate location. 3. 4. 5. Emergency Preparedness / Safety Initiative – Chief Ed Lashley o The SU Police was honored with the Governor’s Crime Prevention Award for Crime Watch/emergency response program. o In the near future, the Emergency Preparedness Team will conduct a full-scale exercise with local law enforcement agencies. Afterwards, executive members of the Team will critique the exercise and make suggestions for improvement. o The SU Police are broadcasting safety advisories via e-mail so that the campus community can be quickly aware of any potentially dangerous situations. International Education – Agata Liszkowska o Agata provided an update on campus-wide International Education initiatives. SU is hosting a Student Fulbright Scholar, Mr. Florian Mann, from Berlin, Germany. He is studying in the Perdue School of Business. o Plans are underway for a reunion of Salisbury University European alumni in Berlin on January 10 – 11, 2009. This event may lead to the first-ever European Alumni Association Chapter, that may lay the groundwork for empowering a potential European Alumni Chapter with the ability to serve as first screeners for new international student applicants. o In January 2009 there will be a record number of faculty-led short term study abroad programs. One hundred and thirty five students will study with 13 faculty members in seven different programs. o The Fulton School is proposing a new academic minor in Latin American Studies that would allow students to complete four of five courses for the minor and earn SU credits while studying during a single semester at our partner institution, the Centers for Interamerican Studies (CEDEI) in Cuenca, Ecuador. Technology Updates – Jerry Waldron o Jerry showed a film highlighting the new media center in the TETC building. The Department of Media Services supports the University by providing video services to support instruction, operating the campus cable TV system, supporting distance learning on the IVN systems (USM IP based teleconferencing), and supporting the television production program in the Department of Communication Arts. This fall SU offered more than 20 classes over IP video throughout the state. o The Integrated Media Center (IMC) opened this past September, and operates both standard definition (SD) and high definition (HD) video studios in the TETC. The PAT Meeting December 11, 2008 Page 3 facility includes video editing rooms, control rooms, sets, and a small production studio. For audio recording, there is a full production recording facility. 6. University Governance o Student Government Association – Lili Afkhami i. The SGA held elections for the next year. Pat Conroy is the incoming President, effective January 1, 2009. ii. A faculty and staff appreciation reception was held last month. iii. The SGA is working on updating their constitution so that clubs would have more participation and access to funds. Faculty Senate – Michael O’Loughlin o i. The Faculty Senate brought forth a resolution that asked that any budgets cuts from administration be done without affecting the quality of academic programs. The Faculty Senate supports a furlough plan, and suggest that any furlough days be proportional to income earned. ii. A request is made from the Faculty Senate that a campus wide announcement be made concerning rules on parking. o Staff Senate – Jackie Eberts i. The Staff Senate has received four nominations of staff members for the Board of Regents Staff Awards. Recorder: Tracy Hajir
