Manager of Research Communications and Outreach
Introduction:
The Office of Institutional Advancement at
the Naval Postgraduate School (NPS) in
Monterey, CA invites applications for a nontenure track faculty position at the Research
Associate level. The review of applications
will begin immediately and will continue
until the position is filled.
Background:
Research Communications and Outreach
promotes the diverse scholarly research and
creative activities of Naval Postgraduate
School faculty and students in order to
further the strategic goals of the institution.
The personnel in the area of Research
Communications (RC&O) connect with a
variety of internal and external University
constituencies working in concert with other
areas of Institutional Advancement. By
translating complex information and making
it available to these constituencies in
interesting, accurate, and engaging ways,
Research Communications and Outreach
demonstrates the value of NPS’ research and
creative work for the departments of
Defense and the Navy and for all national
security interests.
This position will interact and work closely
with the Vice President and Dean of
Research in order to determine a strategic
plan of action for Research Communications
and Outreach that best supports the overall
university mission and goals. The area of
Research Communications and Outreach
resides within the larger Office of
Institutional Advancement reporting to the
Director of Institutional Planning and
Communications, and will also work closely
with the Director of Publications and the
Director of Media and Community
Relations.
Position Description:
The successful candidate will be the lead on
creating and implementing a research
communications and outreach program for
NPS. This program must support the
strategic goals of the university. Included in
the duties are: 1) coordinating researchrelated publications and media coverage; 2)
working directly w/ instructional and
research faculty to identify appropriate
research projects for coverage; 3)
identifying appropriate venues for research
outreach and writing articles as needed; 4)
coordinate with other IA staff to
appropriately showcase research via web
and publications; 5) select and provide
stories for the NPS newswires and press
releases. This position is also responsible for
Research Outreach and will be working w/
NPS faculty to coordinate communications
w/ local K-12 schools, community colleges
and universities. The Manager will be
responsible for designing an approach to
coordinating internship activities for
students from these schools and will work
with teachers/counselors in order to identify
appropriate students. Finally, the Manager is
expected to develop evaluation metrics for
the Research Communications and Outreach
program and to gather and report on these
metrics annually in order to determine
program effectiveness.
Qualifications
Successful candidates must demonstrate the
ability to communicate to a variety of
audiences at all levels of technical expertise.
Strong
writing,
presentation
and
organizational skills are required. Those
with experience in implementing new
programs are preferred.
A Ph.D. in a relevant field and five years of
experience
in
higher
education,
communications, outreach activities having
to do with the promotion of science and
research, publications, or media/public
relations. Experience working with research
university faculty is preferred.
Type of Appointment:
This position is a faculty appointment
reporting to the Director of Institutional
Planning and Communications.
Salary:
Naval Postgraduate School non-tenure track
research faculty are employed as exceptedstatus federal civil servants on a salary scale
that is competitive with other universities.
Faculty are eligible for the health insurance,
life insurance and retirement benefits available to all federal government employees.
Academic appointments and salary are
commensurate with qualifications and
experience.
