Warriors Learn to Fly at Fly’n Hawk Invite
ON Saturday April 13th the 212 Warriors traveled to Millenium Field at Streamwood HS
for the 13th Annual Bartlett Fly’n Hawk Invite. As it is every year, this meet is deep and
talented and requires Sectional and State level efforts to compete at the highest level.
The Warriors have really been looking for team chemistry and energy and on Saturday
all levels found it in brutal cold and windy conditions our boys showed heart, toughness,
and a contagious team pride as we just seemed locked in. Everywhere the coaches
looked a 212 Warrior was competing hard and most importantly this was the most fun
the team was having all season…in the worst conditions! The coaches really felt that the
team came together at this meet and showed the Character it takes to continue the
great Deerfield Track & Field Traditions.
The big highlight of the day was the overall TEAM Championship the F/S team won over
15 other teams by .5pts over Wheeling with 80.33pts to Wheelings 79.83pts who just
the weekend before had almost won the DHS Invite. It’s amazing to think about all the
6th places pts, kicks to edge an athlete out at the line, big attempts on the last attempt
in the field that allowed the Warriors to find that ½ pt needed to just pull it out. This
was the 2nd F/S Bartlett Championship for the program since the 2007 F/S Warriors won
the Bartlett Invite as well. To win such a huge invite with so many good teams really
shows what could be the next few years if these boys continue to work hard and stay
committed to developing the team and culture to the highest level. Having said that this
was definitely a great reward for the hard work this young group puts in and as we
always say “One gets what their works deserve” and these boys deserved this hardware
because they simply out worked and out gutted a lot of GREAT and Programs all day
Saturday. Congrats F/S!
The Varsity also had a great day as they beat their seeded points by 26pts and scored an
impressive 56 pts. As defending champions of this meet the Warriors really defended
their title with intense effort and pride. All day the Varsity were significantly beating
their seeds and stepped up big in every event. This effort placed the team 6th out of 15
teams and was just 16pts out of 2nd! Lakes Community showed a deep and talented
team as they won their 1st Bartlett Invite with 80pts ahead of Bartlett’s 72,
Schaumburg’s 70pts, Hersey’s 68pts, and Prospects 65pts. to round out the TOP 5
teams. This clearly showed the improvement we had on Varsity and our fundamentals
were sound as many teams were being DQ’d in Relays, and other events and the
Warriors where there to move up and take the pts. One could say we don’t fumble the
ball and we don’t turn it over and that was really on display for example as our 4x200
relay moved from 2nd in the slow heat all the way up to 2nd in the Fast heat due to
sound fundamental relay work. Just another example of how the Warriors believe that
“Hard work over time will always put you in place to beat better talent”
Congrats Varsity!
