Classroom Master Teacher

ROLE SUMMARY
The Classroom Master Teacher has the opportunity to teach a larger class load, take on more classes, and/or take on more
challenging class assignments. Each principal will determine the grade-level and content area assignments for the Classroom
Master Teacher based on their school/course enrollment, students’ needs, and the candidate’s qualifications.
REQUIRED RESPONSIBILITIES
ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES (OPTIONAL/FLEXIBLE)






Effectively fulfill all standard teaching responsibilities
with an increased number of students, more classes,
and/or with a more challenging class assignment.
Utilize innovative instructional practices to effectively deliver
instruction to an increased case load of students and/or a
specific subgroup of students targeted.
Serve as a demonstration classroom to model effective
instruction with a larger class and/or a specific
subpopulation of students.
Provide feedback (as requested) to help inform the
district’s identification of best practices when teaching
more students.
Some responsibilities (e.g., data analysis, instructional
planning, grading, etc.) will need to be completed after
school hours and/or during summer break.



The school has the flexibility to choose the Master
Teacher’s grade-level and content area of focus based
on the school’s needs and the teacher’s expertise and
qualifications.
Classroom Master Teachers may be paired with an
associate teacher, paraprofessional, or teacher aide in
order to receive additional support.
If the Master Teacher is working with a specific
subpopulation of students, they may identify and share
best practices for providing effective instruction to
these students with other teachers within the school.
Work with a team of teachers to problem-solve
challenges with a specific subgroup of students (if
applicable).
EXPECTED OUTCOMES



More students and/or more students in a specific subpopulation are taught by an Exemplary teacher.
Increased student mastery of content as measured by interim, formative, diagnostic, and state assessments.
Rigorous implementation of the Common Core State Standards (CCSS).
LENGTH OF TERM FOR THE ROLE
Two years. Term may be extended pending a review of school needs and the Master Teacher’s success in the role after the second
year.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS




At least 5 years of teaching experience.
Must demonstrate a significant pattern of student growth.
Consistently earn Exemplary ratings across all standards and most sub-standards of the evaluation rubric.
Must have two consecutive overall Exemplary ratings according to the teacher evaluation system.
SELECTION CRITERIA







Evidence of high levels of student growth (including student growth data, where available).
Particularly strong evidence of the following skills according to the teacher performance evaluation indicators:
o Strong subject matter knowledge
o Well-structured lessons
o Implements a variety of assessment methods
o Adjusts practice to student needs
o Sets clear expectations
o High expectations for all students
o Meets diverse needs
Demonstrated ability to use multiple effective classroom management strategies.
Demonstrated ability to achieve student growth with a specific subpopulation of students (if applicable).
Exceptional organizational skills.
Extremely high levels of efficiency and productivity.
Well respected among peers.
SELECTION PROCESS
Interested candidates will need to complete the following selection process:
 Submit a portfolio containing the following information:
o Evidence of high performance according to the teacher evaluation system
o An application containing answers to self-reflection questions
o Examples of high quality instructional artifacts
o Principal recommendation
o Teacher nominations
o Peer recommendations
 An application aligned to the requirements for the role
 An interview with the principal and a member of the school leadership team
 A classroom observation completed by a member of the Central Office
A central office Selection Committee will review these materials and make all final selection decisions.
