Course Standard NDT116 Bond Testing for NDT Course Description This course is designed to provide students with the classroom and laboratory experience which will prepare them to perform bond testing on composite and conventional aviation parts/assemblies. Topics will include materials, equipment and bond testing methods. Laboratory experiences will include selecting and performing bond testing on various types composite and mechanical parts/assemblies. Hours Credit 3 Prerequisite/Core requisite: Completed Level II Eddy Current or Level II Ultrasonic Course Guide Outcomes: The student will be able to identify bonding testing and its relationship to Eddy Current and Ultrasonic methods of testing Competencies Review principles of eddy current testing Review principles of ultrasonic testing Identify Bonding NDT method Identify the history of Bonding NDT method Outcomes: The student will be able to demonstrate bond testing skills and techniques Competencies Identify the materials that are testing using bonding testing including metallic and nonmetallic ( composites) Describe the types of composites tested by this method including Kevlar/honeycomb, fiberglass, graphite/honeycomb, adhesive bonded skins, doublers, stringers, ribs, frames, Kevlar, adhesive bonded skins and doublers Identify the equipment used in this testing method Identify the functions of each type of equipment Demonstrate the ability to operate the testing equipment associated with bond testing Identify the types of transducers used in bond testing Operate transducers used in bond testing Outcomes: The student will be able select the appropriate bond testing method in a aviation based industry scenario Competencies 10.17.08 Identify the MIA – Mechanical and Impedance method Identify the Resonance method Identify the Pitch Catch methods including pitch catch sweet, RF, Impulse, Identify the elements of each method Demonstrate ability to utilize each method Compare and contrast the advantages and limitations for each method Select the appropriate method for aviation based industry scenario Outcomes: The student will be able to demonstrate bond testing methods on various types of defective aviation parts/assemblies. Competencies Multiple bonded layers Identify the type of defect Identify the appropriate bonding test methods to use Demonstrate the test method Interpret the results Document the results ( written and instrumentation) per standard Bonded joint Identify the type of defect Identify the appropriate bonding test methods to use Demonstrate the test method Interpret the results Document the results ( written and instrumentation) per standard Adhesive failure Identify the type of defect Identify the appropriate bonding test methods to use Demonstrate the test method Interpret the results Document the results ( written and instrumentation) per standard Multiple layer disbanding Identify the type of defect Identify the appropriate bonding test methods to use Demonstrate the test method Interpret the results Document the results ( written and instrumentation) per standard Skin to core disbanding Identify the type of defect Identify the appropriate bonding test methods to use Demonstrate the test method Interpret the results Document the results ( written and instrumentation) per standard Damaged core Identify the type of defect Identify the appropriate bonding test methods to use Demonstrate the test method 10.17.08 Interpret the results Document the results ( written and instrumentation) per standard Suggested Resources List books, and other resources used here Handout from the instructor 10.17.08
