Yard Waste Collection For a Clean City The City of Des Moines Sanitation Division collects and composts yard waste and hauls away bulk trash. Yard Waste Pickup is available year round and occurs on the regular pickup day for that area. Yard Waste pickup is typically largest in leaf season. During an average week in the summer over 140 tons of waste is collected. Yard Waste is taken to a compost facility leased from the city and operated by Metro Waste Authority the city there it is processed into clean high quality compost. Benefits: Residents do not need to dispose of their own waste. The city remains clean and attractive The accumulated waste does not impact the environment. End product compost helps revitalize and enrich poor soils. Residents who frequently need to dispose of yard waste can utilize a wheeled 64 or 96 gallon green-capped cart similar to those given out for garbage and recycling at a cost of $10.42 or $8.34 per month. This is more cost effective than using the bags if you habitually use more than 6 or 4 bags per month respectively. In addition, the totes are easy to move around the yard and do not break in wet conditions or get torn by twigs or short branches. Alternatively the waste can be collected into approved Compost It! paper bags. Another option is to apply stickers to generic paper bags/cardboard boxes. Approved paper bags or stickers can be bought for $1.15 each at Dahl’s and Hyvee locations around town. Waste will only be collected if it meets these criteria. Waste piled by the curb will remain there. Pet waste, rocks, plastic, earth, and tree stumps are not collected.
