15_AM_GS_02 Grass Committee Meeting Agenda & Meeting Report Asheville, North Carolina Monday, June 23, 2014 1:30 PM – 3:00 PM Chair Doug Boze Vice Chair Dennis Lundeen 1) Call to Order – The meeting was called to order by chairman Doug Boze at 1:45pm June 23rd, 2014. 2) Introductions / roll call / distribute sign-in sheet – a. Introductions were made by each attendee at the meeting. Roll call was completed and the sign-up sheet distributed for all attendees to sign. 3) Review AOSCA anti-trust compliance policy a. Reviewed per requirement. 4) Review & adopt agenda a. Agenda accepted by unanimous vote in favor. 5) Approve minutes from 2013 meeting, #14_AM_GS_02 a. A motion to accept the minutes as written passed by unanimous vote in favor. 6) Council Standards Change Doc – Standards change: warm season turfgrass, off-types, other crops (Auman) a. Dustin Auman of North Carolina Crop Improvement Association presented a proposed change to the “Warm Season Vegetativiely Propagated Turf Grass Certification Standards” to more fairly represent the number of off-types/othervarieties across the warm season species of Zoysia,Centipede, and St. Augustine grass. 7) Fluorescence Testing for Purity Determination of Ryegrasses (Lundeen) a. Dennis Lundeen presented a powerpoint developed by Dan Curry and Sharon Davidson on behalf of Pacific Northwest seed laboratories. with regard to a proposed change in seed test reporting for annual and perennial ryegrass. b. Randy Preater noted that they do not use the fluorescence test for certification in Canada, and use other post-control methods to determine annual from perennial. c. Ben Lang noted that many Minnesota growers have concerns about the current reporting metod, as “annual ryegrass” shows in their test reports, but it has never been produced in the state. d. Fawad Shah suggested to make certain there is support from a wide crosssection of the grass seed industry while this program is being developed. He also noted that the Federal Seed Act is about “Truth in Labeling”, and if the GRASS June 23, 2014 15_AM_GS_02 change reflects the “truth” better than current methods, then a change could be possible. 8) Other business a. No other business conducted 9) Action Items a. Motion to accept the standards as proposed and move the request forward to the Council meeting. Motion passed by a unanimous vote in favor. b. Motion was made that the AOSCA Standards Council send a letter of support to AOSA/SCST regarding proposed changes in reporting of fluorescence testing, and a request for further review of reporting methods and additional industry review and support prior to adoption be completed. 10) Adjourn a.
