Discussed email and flyer sent by Nino Polizzo of Rocket Science Tutors. RST celebrates, (1) 10th
anniversary of RST volunteers/UCI graduate students providing middle school students with
hands-on engineering labs/ demos; and, (2) 3rd anniversary Rocket Build/ Launch Program for
about 100 students of Turtle Rock Elementary School. Will conduct RST Summer Engineering
Camp at the Academy, 28July-08 August.
Jim Martin can reserve Duck Room (Irvine Regional WaterDistrict, near UCI) for programs,
complementary for IRWD customers. Room has chairs and tables with capacity for 100 people.
Can pick up key on July 22nd . Hosted events will charge $5 members and $6.00 non-members
(pre-registered) and $6.25 walk-ins for pizza; speaker portion event free.
John Rose writing up a MoU for AAIA_OC hosting events at Boeing facilities. Meetings at
Boeing28 have not presented problems. However, greater prudence in event frequency needs
discussion. Perhaps, having member dinner meetings once a quarter is an appropriate option.
Jim Martin suggests writing up MoA to include hosting dinner meetings at Boeing 4 times a year.
One Boeing member should be in attendance. Coordinate with Melissa Baker for Bldg 28
bookings and Mike Sosa for Bldg 17 bookings. Fire and Security contact person is Michael R.
Nelson. Executive sponsor for AAIA_OC at Boeing HB facility is Rick Baily.
Chairperson-elect (A. Gohardani):


Will feature ASAT Conference briefings in Aerospace America.
Discussed the role of Springs of Dreams Corporation, springsofdreams.org. The purpose of SoD
is to investigate and discuss subjects that impact society and influences its future. Defining
AIAA_OC affiliation and role in SoD project developed by Amir will be discussed at the next
meeting.
Treasurer (Ridout):

Bank reports in compliance. CAT rebate revenues (approx. $3000) have not come in for this
year. Another $4000 PayPal expected to come in. Checking account fee of $12/ month when
balance falls below $5000. Discussed maturity date of Certificate of Deposit and what to do
about CD (withdrawal or not).
No bills to be paid. Motion made and PASSED to accept June 2014 Financial report.
Audit was completed and forwarded to AIAA HDQRS, and subsequently accepted.
Past 4 audit reports show spending trends of deficit budgets, expenses>incomes except for
those for 2010 and 2011 relating to LEGO funds. Balance in checking account is about $3000,
better than five or ten years ago. Pre-college expenses have been budgeted for over $6000. No
mention of Dick Edwards Memorial to SSDC funds of about $4200. DBF contributions last year
were about $825. Did not contribute to RST last year. May budget for RST contribution for next
year. Phil motioned that AIAA_OC contribute $500 for DBF and for RST; Motion PASSED.
Discussion followed with recommendations to contact Nino Polizzo of RST for further
requirements and wait for UCI student team to provide DBF budget. Pre-college budget of
$2500 includes TARC $100/team @ 16 teams, Science Fair and RST, not DBF. Dino recommends
a better-defined pre-college budget.
Gene Justin’s email for review and discussion.
Membership (Welge):

Middle school students of Santa Ana Enrichment Program made a foam rocket (pipe
insulation from Home Depot). They launched the rockets at 15-45-70 degree angles to
determine the best performance. Other students made cardboard and balsa rockets, then
will launch them at Lucerne Dry Lake this weekend.
Council Member-at-Large (R. Koepke):

Thirteen TARC teams of Southern California, 1 team from Walnut, CA., are engaged in S-4
(Small Satellite for Secondary Students) program developed by Sonoma State University in
cooperation with Tripoli Rocketry’s AeroPak prefecture and Endeavor Institute, utilizing
COTS parts and sensors. Without SSU parts, Bob Koepke helped National Association of
Rocketry/ AIAA_OC organize into a Student Payload and Rocketry Challenge (SPARC) for
students to develop and test satellite with similar capabilities. SPARC launches will be
demonstrated on October 11th, ROCtober at Lucerne Dry Lake. Students must submit 500word report weeks before ROCtober. Students will also make proposals. Tutorials available
on website.
