DNA from descendants of Thomas Ireland [abt 1615-1669] of Hempstead, Long Island, New York. The first known mention of Thomas Ireland is found in Dutch records. In February 1644 [in the modern calendar 1645] Thomas Eirlandt of Warckschiet was in Amsterdam on the yacht "Royal" attempting to get paid for his work for the West Indies Company, having just traveled from New Amsterdam [New York], which places him in the Americas in 1644 or earlier. He was one of the founding proprietors of Hempstead, Long Island, New York in 1644. It is presumed he is of English ancestry but his origins are unknown. It has been speculated that Warckschiet is Dutch for Warwickshire. However the Duke of Warwick II was an early investor in the American colonies and there are several early 1600s sites named for him in the colonies [Virginia, Orange Co., NY, Rhode Island] which may have been Thomas's residence before Hempstead. Thomas Ireland was married to Joan/Jone, probably after moving to Hempstead. Her surname is not known. Thomas names his four children in his 1669 will. His only son was Thomas Ireland II who was not yet 21 in 1669 and probably was under 18, giving him a birth year of 1651-53. Thomas died abt. 1711. He married, probably twice. His last wife was named Mary, surname unknown. His family is listed in the 1698 Hempstead census in the following order, which appears to be, based on other information, the birth order of the children: Thomas Irland, Mary Irland, John Irland, Thomas Irland, Mary Irland, adam Irland, Daniell Irland, Job Irland, amos Irland, Elizabeth Irland, Joseph Irland. We know that one or more children were born to Thomas and Mary after this census. John and Job Ireland stayed on Long Ireland; No further records of Thomas Ireland III have been found; Adam Ireland moved to Westchester Co. NY. The early descendants of John, Job and Adam are found in New York, mostly on Long Island and the area bordering the Hudson River. Daniel, Amos and Joseph Ireland moved to the Egg Harbor area of New Jersey. James Ireland is named in New Jersey probate records as the brother of Daniel, Amos and Joseph. He was apparently born after 1698. It may be that some of the New Jersey Irelands descend from other son[s] born after 1698. Documentation for the generations that followed the third generation in America is sparse. However, many lines have family stories that lead back to Long Island and the DNA evidence is bearing out this relationship. The kits are labeled by the earliest documented ancestor [generation 3 or later] of the donor, indicated with Bold. When more than one donor has the same ancestor the lineage is shown to where it divides. Italics indicates the generation 3 ancestor where known. “Hudson” indicates one of the New York counties bordering the Hudson River, New York. There are several people who match Thomas Ireland's DNA who do not carry the Ireland surname. There is no doubt that Thomas Ireland was an ancestor in the paternal line. This is explained by adoption, taking the name of a step-father, a woman giving birth out of wedlock, the child retaining her maiden name or a married woman pregnant by an Ireland male, but accepted knowingly or unknowingly by her husband. I have contacted two of these men and they show some interest in determining their ancestrial line. So far we have one person who matches the Thomas Ireland of Long Island's DNA who is not descended from him. That is Henry George Ireland who moved to Canada from England and whose earliest known ancestor lived in London. So far this is our only connection with the Engish ancestor of this group. The obituary states that Jarvis's father was Merlyn Ireland [1901-1967] Jarvis lived in Chautauqua Co., New York his whole life. Merlyn Ireland was the son of William Gilbert Ireland. He is listed in the 1910 census for Harmony, Chautauqua Co. NY as Merlin Ireland, age 9, son of William Ireland, age 45. William Gilbert Ireland [1865-?] was the son of James Ireland. The 1880 census lists Wm. G. Ireland, age 15, son of Jas. Ireland in Poland Twp., Chautauqua Co., NY. James lists his son, William G. Ireland, in his will filed in Chautauqua Co., NY [published on WorldConnect]. James Ireland [1820-1894] was the son of Nathaniel Ireland. He is listed in Nathaniel's probate papers as one of his children. Nathaniel lived in Poland Twp., Chautauqua Co., NY [probate papers published on WorldConnect] Nathaniel Ireland [1787-1862] was born in New York. Family records in the hands of another descendant states that his parents were John Ireland and Philaner Brown [1750-?] John Ireland [abt 1750- abt 1822] and Philaner Brown are found in deed records in Dutchess Co., NY which makes reference to previously having been from Westchester Co., NY; and Philaner is called Philaner Ireland in the will of her father, Nathaniel Brown. The Browns were Quakers and information about them is found in Quaker records. A contemporary document demonstrating that John and Philaner Ireland are Nathaniel's parents has not been found. 46518: Descendancy from Donor: unnamed. Basic information provided by Karen and Angie Hill who is also part of this line.] John Thomas Irelan, donor. John's father was Ora [Orie] Gilbert Irelan [9 Oct 1887-11 Mar 1944] Darke Co., Ohio. Birth and death dates from grave stone, Hallansburg Cemetery, Darke Co., Ohio. Ora's father was Norman Tillson Irelan [14 Dec 1851-29 Jan 1932]. The 1900 census for Harrison Twp., Darke Co., Ohio lists Norman T. Irelan, 48, as head of household, born Dec 1851 with son Ora G. Irelan, 2 years old, born Oct 1877. Norman's father was Aaron Abel Irelan [12 Sep 1818-26 July 1910]. Aaron is listed next to Norman in the 1900 census. He is 81 years old, born in Sept of 1818. Both of his parents were born in New Jersey. In the 1870 census for Harrison Twp., Darke Co., Ohio, Norman T. Ireland, age 18, is found in the household of Aaron Ireland, age 51. Aaron's father was Moses Irelan[d] [1790-22 Nov 1872], tombstone, Wilt Cemetery, Darke Co., Ohio. Moses Ireland is also found in the household of Aaron Irelan[d] in the 1870 census, Harrison Twp., Darke Co., Ohio, age 80, born in New Jersey, he can neither read or write. [The named changed from Ireland to Irelan with Moses and this may be the reason why.] Moses' parents are believed to be Aaron Ireland and Darcas Bowen. Family tradition says that Aaron died in an accident in 1813 and that Moses came home from serving in the War of 1812 to take care of the family. It appears that Moses was the oldest child. Darcas apparently married again. Her tombstone in the Old Castine Cemetery, Castine, Darke Co., Ohio reads Darcas Robinson, d September 5, 1846 age 77 yrs & 11 days. Aaron and Darcas apparently married and had their first two or three children in New Jersey before moving to the Cincinnati, Ohio area. Family tradition refers to an origin in Cumberland Co., New Jersey. There are both Ireland and Bowen families found in Cumberland Co. in the 1790s. A large contingent of settlers from Cumberland Co. helped found Cincinnati between 1788-1800. It is believed that Aaron Ireland was related to Dayton Ireland [1755-aft 1840] who fought in the Revolution and was from Cumberland. The name Dayton Irelan is found in the Darke Co. Irelan family.
