denkmal Moscow 2015 International Trade Fair of Heritage Preservation, Restoration and Museum Technology (14 –16 October 2015) Leipzig, 3 November 2015 Final report denkmal Moscow unites international heritage conservationists Far more trade visitors than ever denkmal Moscow, the International Trade Fair of Heritage Preservation, Restoration and Museum Technology, was held for the third time from 14 to 16 October 2015 – and drew more visitors than ever before. A total of 2,970 registered trade visitors came to see the products and services displayed by over 80 exhibitors from 5 countries (China, Germany, Croatia, the Netherlands and Russia). denkmal Moscow was organized by Leipziger Messe International (LMI) in conjunction with Russia’s National Guild of Heritage Keepers. Once again, denkmal Moscow built thematic bridges with its parent event in Leipzig. Areas discussed by trade visitors at denkmal Leipzig last year were addressed in more detail in Moscow. One key theme this year was the repurposing of industrial architecture, and Moscow’s heritage conservationists are planning to harness experience from Germany and the Netherlands. Discussions on initial and continuing training begun in Leipzig were also continued. For example, Claus Gröhn, the President of Leipzig Chamber of Crafts, attended a number of meetings, including with his Moscow counterpart. The fact is that about 45% of Moscow’s heritage personnel require requalification or supplementary training. The types of specialists most in demand are restorers of wood, stone, porcelain, plaster and paper, and gilders are also required. “One outstanding feature of denkmal Moscow is its political and economic bridging function,” explained Markus Geisenberger, Managing Director of LMI. “In difficult times, denkmal Moscow ensures that ties between Germany and Russia are maintained and breathes life into the partnership between Moscow and Leipzig. The fact that it was opened by Sergej Sobyanin (the Mayor of Moscow) and Nikolai Malakov (Russia’s Deputy Minister of Culture) underlines the high status it enjoys in Moscow.” Furthermore, Moscow’s Minister of Culture and Foreign Trade, the Minister of Culture of the Kaliningrad Region, and the heads of the heritage authorities in Moscow and St. Petersburg attended cooperation meetings at denkmal Moscow and also visited the German pavilion. Moreover, there were 14 exhibitors from Germany at the show, including manufacturers of building materials, chemicals used in page 1 of 3 construction, and museum equipment as well as craftsmen and institutions. The German pavilion’s participants gave the exhibition the thumbs-up with 90% of them reporting that their expectations had been met. And even before the expo was over, some of them had already signed up for the next denkmal Moscow in autumn 2017. denkmal’s congress program featured leading experts from various countries and was well attended. An international conference was hosted by Remmers, a German company specializing in products for the restoration, protection and preservation of buildings. Other highlights at denkmal Moscow included seminars organized by the Netherlands and a restoration forum on both future and completed projects. Demonstrations of technology and craftsmanship along with live workshops involving school and college students in areas such as painting, embroidery, and the restoration of furniture, stone, icons and intarsia also proved to be big attractions. “We’re already looking forward to denkmal in 2017,” declared Markus Geisenberger, thinking ahead. “During the show we noted several ideas and suggestions for raising denkmal’s profile in Russia in close cooperation with our partners and with the help of all-Russian institutions.” Even so, the market prospects for exhibitors are already good. During the exhibition, Mayor Sobyanin reported that over the previous five years, 600 buildings and an additional 4,000 façades had been restored – a tenfold increase on the period before he took office. Exhibitors’ statements Anna Sidorova, Marketing Director of KAZ d.o.o. (Croatia): “The exhibition was a resounding success for us. Since it’s very specialized, visitors approached us with specific questions. Besides, the congress program was first-rate. By the way, in 2016 we’ll also be taking part in denkmal Leipzig for the first time.” Anna Zhukova, Deputy Director of BaltStroy St. Petersburg: "Our company already participated as an exhibitor at the fair and in the side program of the denkmal Moscow for the third time. We especially want to highlight the full contents and current meetings and roundtables at the stand of the Moscow Government in this year." Berit Hennig, Leipzig Chamber of Crafts: “This year saw a rise in the exhibition’s quality and popularity. The mood on the German stand was upbeat and the exhibitors were optimistic. Relocating the show to the VDNKh grounds was a good move.” Jörg Lange, Marketing Director of Remmers in Russia: “denkmal was successful for us. Thanks to the conference and our participation in the congress of the international committee of experts, we managed to raise our brand’s profile and boost Remmers’ image in Russia.” Olga Loginova, Marketing Director of DAW Russia (Caparol): "The restoration of monuments is a very important and difficult issue. For the producers of materials, it is not only important to maintain the original appearance of the historic building, but also to propose technologies that make it possible to preserve the idea of the masters of the past periods for a long duration. And in this case the communication between manufacturers, restorers, builders and governmental structures is particularly important. The denkmal Moscow is providing an ideal platform for this. So this is exactly the reason for DAW Russia to take part page 2 of 3 at denkmal Moscow since its first implementation in the Russian Federation. We would like to thank the organisers for the selection of the venue of 2015. On the occasion of the 70th anniversary of VDNH Moscow, the government has adopted the restoration of this truly significant object of the architectural heritage of Russia. We very are proud that the products of our company are used for this project.“ Introducing Leipziger Messe International GmbH (LMI) Leipziger Messe International (LMI) is part of the Leipziger Messe Group.
