City prepares for second snow emergency
With a second winter storm warning from the National Weather Service and reports of heavy snow
possible Feb. 26 the City of Leavenworth is preparing for another snow emergency.
Forecasters predict this storm will drop about 9 to 12 inches of snow on the area at night, and possibly
more in the morning. Because of this, City snow plows will begin working around midnight.
Cars parked along emergency snow routes should be moved tonight, Monday Feb. 25, so that that the
snow plowing will be effective.
City Manager Scott Miller reminds residents that when a snow emergency is declared, the City can have
vehicles towed at the owner’s expense if the vehicle is parked along a route marked “emergency snow
route.” Vehicles also risk being plowed in with several feet of snow when they park alongside the street
rather than in driveways.
Miller said once the city declares a snow emergency, vehicle owners may have little time to remove
their vehicles from snow routes before city crews must clear the roads. A map of the snow routes, in

The National Weather Service is predicting the heaviest snowfall during the evening after midnight Feb.
26. Crews will begin at 7 p.m. and work 12-hour shifts. Once snowfall begins, city crews will work to
clear emergency snow routes. Contract crews will work to clear residential routes.
Public Works Director Mike McDonald said even with all crews working 12-hour shifts, it could still take
time to clear the roads safely. Typically, non-emergency routes in residential areas will get two passes
with the snow plows, one going in each direction.
McDonald said crews can begin treating icy roads once the snowfall has been completed.
City trash collection will be delayed. Those who normally receive trash collection Tuesday will have trash
collection Wednesday. Wednesday trash collection will be moved to Thursday and Thursday’s trash
collection will move to Friday.
Other closures for Tuesday, Feb. 26 include the Riverfront Community Center.
Snow removal from downtown streets is expected to begin the evening of Wednesday, Feb. 27.
