Speeches
In collaboration with a partner (groups of 2), choose one of your utopian society laws and punishments
and write a speech designed to get your society to adopt your system of laws and pass into law the
punishments that accompany those laws. Both group embers will write a speech, but they will serve
different purposes.

The first speech will be given to accept your laws, assuming the country is in the midst of
revolution and needs a leader and a system to step up and take control. Your speech should be
designed to inform the people of your plan and why it is the best choice for your society. (50
Points)

The second speech will assume that society has already elected you and your laws to govern
them, but now you must convince them to accept your code of punishments that must be adopted
in order to successfully enforce your laws. (50 Points)
To receive full credit on your speech, you must fulfill the following requirements:
Useful techniques such as repetition, appealing to fear, rhetorical questions, amplification, etc. should be
present in your writing. For examples of speeches see the AF speeches analysis notes posted on the class
website. (15 Points) There is a minimum requirement of three techniques per speech. There is not a limit
on how many techniques can be used.
List all of the techniques used in your speech. Also, highlight each area of your speech where your listed
techniques are used. (15 Points)
Successfully present your society’s laws and punishments in a way that is appealing and positive for the
lives of the people. (10 Points)
Your speech should be a minimum of 30 seconds and no more than two minutes. (10 Points)
