The Department SLT Link Manager: Jane Witheford j.witheford@pimlicoacademy.org The History Department is ambitious and successful. We have seven historians in the department who are passionate about delivering high quality history lessons which deepen students’ knowledge and understanding of history. As a department, we value outstanding subject knowledge and the ability to develop students to the very highest levels. We have an excellent track record of raising attainment at both GCSE and A-Level and the subject is a popular choice for students. As an Academy specialism, History has three periods of curriculum time per week from year 7. The Department is exceptionally well-resourced, with its own suite of rooms and a significant stock of books and other materials. The Department also contributes to the wider life of the Academy through History assemblies, theme days and trips. Pimlico Academy will be introducing a new knowledge rich curriculum at KS3 from September, integrating British and world history into one coherent chronology. Year 7 will be spent studying the Ancient World, Year 8 the Middle Ages and Year 9 the Beginning of Modern Times. A number of overarching narratives will be explored over the three years, including the enduring legacies of ancient civilisations, the political, social and cultural impact of religion, the nature and legitimacy of political power and the economic and cultural impact of invasion, migration, trade and empire. Our new curriculum aims to give students a solid chronological and geographical framework on which to build their knowledge, enabling them to develop an understanding of the history of the country they live in within the context of the wider world and to prepare them thoroughly for KS4. At KS4, students study either Edexcel Modern World or WJEC Modern World History. The topics covered include USA 1919-1941, International Relations, Divided Union and Victorian Policing. At KS5, students study Tsarist Russia, Nazi Germany, International Relations 19452004 and students also complete their Historical Assignment on the British Empire. The exam board is AQA. We are constantly seeking to improve and develop our delivery of the curriculum and we see accurate assessment and useful feedback as key to our success, therefore a good working knowledge of these courses would be desirable. To support our students and feed their curiosity for the subject we run a History Club as well as extra History sessions at KS4 and 5. The History Department takes full advantage of the Academy’s exceptional Raising Aspirations Programme to expose students to learning experiences beyond the classroom including lectures from visiting historians, annual trips to Rome and Berlin, Jack the Ripper tours and debating the ethics of the Koh-i-Noor Diamond at the British Museum.
