NEWS RELEASE Embargoed until 16:00 Friday 6th September Perth & Pitlochry are two of four Scottish entries to share top environmental prize For the first time in its 47 year history, Beautiful Scotland’s prestigious Rosebowl Trophy has been won by four equally outstanding entrants. At an award ceremony in Aberdeen held on Friday 6 September, Lord Purvis, Ambassador for Keep Scotland Beautiful, announced that Beautiful Perth and Pitlochry in Bloom had achieved the same overall top mark as Dufftown in Bloom and St Andrews in Bloom, beating fifty other entrants in the highly contended Beautiful Scotland competition. Beautiful Perth also went home with the Large Town Trophy and the Wright Sustainability Award for the Friarton Recycling Education Project, and Pitlochry in Bloom scooped the Small Town Trophy. In addition, a number of other Tayside entrants scooped the following top awards: Carnoustie Community Council – Royal Caledonian Horticultural Society Trophy, for the War Memorial; Comrie in Colour – Community Horticulture Award Muthill in Bloom – Small Village Trophy; In total, nine entrants from Tayside competed. The expert volunteer judges who visited the Rosebowl winners this year commented: ‘Perth in Bloom has a strong link with the local council. The partnering and liaison with other groups and organisations within the city makes for a vibrant and proactive whole, which works very positively for the city. A new heather collection is vying for NEWS RELEASE the position as the largest in Scotland. The recycling centre at Friarton is like all others - well laid out, busy etc. What sets it aside and makes it different is the education element. There is a special visitors drop off point and, from here, a member of the team will take you around the centre to see what is happening and explain why it is happening. The route is taken not through the centre but above it on a special elevated walkway which keeps the visitor away from any danger but allows a great overview of what goes on in the centre. The beauty of this is that the walk can be guided or you can do it on your own. The landscaped areas around the depot have been retained by used tyres, and the plant material is sustainable with a good selection of shrubs which are well looked after and cover the ground minimising the need for maintenance. Throughout Perth, sustainable planting is augmenting and in some cases replaces annual bedding. Of special mention is Needless Road which has a clever mix of annuals, with a backbone of good perennial planting. There are also very good planting schemes in the Rodney Gardens & Riverside Park.’ ‘Pitlochry makes a welcome and successful return to Beautiful Scotland after a year out and success in the Britain in Bloom champions group. Tourism is a vital part of the local economy and the group makes a significant contribution to the attractiveness of the town to the many visitors.
