On the Inside: Managing Change, Styles, Generations, and their Influence on Training
Program Integrity
BIOGRAPHY
The dynamics within a training department can be a delicate balance in maintaining the
strength and integrity of a training program. Generation gaps, teaching style differences
amongst instructors, and personnel changes can have a definite impact on delivery of
training and the outcome. Adaptability is a key factor. The curriculum is what it is, but the
more humanistic pieces can make it or break it.
Consistency and providing the same level of training to all students is is mandatory.
However, w/the evolution of the generation of learners, training departments are also faced
w/the evolution of these same generations of instructors. In other words, not only do we
have Gen X/Millennium learners, these same generations are coming into training
departments as instructors. How do we ensure consistency of the materials being provided
while capitalizing on the strengths and value every generation brings to the training process.
Key elements include: Communication, respect, and a cohesive working environment. From
a management perspective, it is imperative to maintain perhaps an even greater measure of
surveillance when change within a department has occurred via training observations, a
more vigorous mtg schedule, but also motivating those within our departments to recognize
the value/strengths of co-workers. In turn, working together to give a broad and balance
training experience to students while strengthening the internal workings of a training dept.
