Description of the Task You are asked to conduct research and investigation into the properties and performance of textile fabrics and equipment that make them suitable for specific end uses. Present section 1 of the task on white A4 paper, present section 2 of the task on A3 (max 4 pages) or A4 (max 8 pages) staple both sections together in the top left hand corner with the cover sheet and assessment criteria attached. Submit your task into the Assessment task bin on the identified due date. This task consists of TWO (2) sections. Section 1: Research on a Textile Innovation (5 marks) Section 2: Experimental Report (15 marks) Section 1: Research on a Textile Innovation. (5 marks) Select an innovation in fabric to complete parts A and B of this section. (a) Explain how the fabric is made and describe the features of the fabric that make it innovative, include images or diagrams and examples of end uses (200 words). (b) Discuss the impact of this innovation on the following: - The consumer (100 words) - The manufacturer (100 words) - The employee (100 words) - The environment (100 words) Section 2: Experimental Report (15 Marks) Imagine you are designing a textile product for a client. To successfully construct this product you need to conduct a research and investigation to determine the suitability of the selected fibres, yarns, fabrics, construction techniques and equipment. Complete the following : Maximum length: 8 pages (A4) or 4 pages (A3) (15 marks) Use the scaffold below to present your report. a) Identify and describe the product that you have designed for your client and include an image, this may be an image you have sourced from a magazine, the internet or one you have designed yourself. b) Justify the use of materials, equipment and manufacturing processes and evaluate the properties and performance of fabrics, yarns and fibres used in the manufacture of the textile item you are designing. Include evidence of and document the following: Experimentation with materials, equipment and manufacturing processes applicable to the textile item you are designing. As a result of any experimentation communicate design and/or construction ideas. NB – Experimentation results may be presented as photographs or fabric samples where appropriate. Justify the use of materials, equipment and manufacturing processes used based on the results of experimentation. Evaluate the properties and performance of fabric, yarn and fibres used, in relation to the end product. Subject Specific Terminology used in completing the task: Consumer - An individual or company exchanging money for goods or services. Design / ing – Creating solutions to an identified need. Employee - Individual working for another in return for wages. Environment - Physical surroundings Fabric - Produced by weaving, knitting or bonding of yarns or fibres. Used to create textile items. Fibre - A fine thread – like substance used to make yarns and fabrics, may be natural or man – made. Innovation - A new process, product or way of doing things Manufacture / r - To make or produce goods. Properties - Features of a fibre, yarn or fabric that make it suited to a specific end use. Yarn - Threads created after spinning a fibre or blending 2 different fibres together. 2. Classroom Learning: Students have been prepared to effectively complete this task through: Learning about: End-use applications the influences of fabric, yarn and fibre properties and fabric finishes on the selection of textile end-uses in each of the focus areas: apparel, furnishings, costume, textile arts, non-apparel the advantages and disadvantages of innovations and related textile technologies on: - the consumer - the manufacturer - the employee - the environment - materials, equipment and manufacturing processes selection of appropriate fabric, yarn and fibre Learning to: analyse and evaluate the functional criteria for items from one focus area to determine the contributing fabric, yarn and fibre properties and fabric finishes investigate an innovation in fabric development, yarn development and fibre development and the impact of each on society and the environment investigate and experiment with materials, equipment and manufacturing processes for the production of a Major Textiles Project make effective decisions based on the application of knowledge Assessment Criteria - Section 1: Research on a Fabric Innovation.
