Whitewater Middle School Family and Consumer Science Syllabus Teacher Information: Rachel Burrows 770-460-3450 (School Phone) Burrows.rachel@mail.fcboe.org Planning Period: 5th Period from 11:45-1:03 Course Description: The goal of Family and Consumer Sciences (FACS) is to provide all students with an introduction to the Family and Consumer Sciences Career Pathways. The FACS career pathways are Nutrition and Food Science, Consumer Services, Interior and Fashion Design, and Family, Community, and Global Leadership. Culinary Arts career pathway is Culinary Arts. Education career pathways are Early Childhood Education and Teaching as a Profession. Students will acquire fundamental knowledge and skills necessary for success in any of the career pathways. Exposure to career possibilities in each area will allow students to successfully integrate their own interests into a career plan. In this course, middle school students will experience a variety of activities that will promote self-awareness, leadership, teamwork, and the development of other skills needed to achieve personal goals relating to family, home, career, and community. These rules are to provide a safe and positive learning environment for all. Failure to follow these rules will result in consequences determined by the teacher/academic team (see next section). All school rules apply in class as well. Be Prepared: come with all materials and use restroom before class Be on time, IN YOUR SEAT, and ready to work Be respectful and polite of people and their property Be safe around the kitchen and sewing equipment Ask permission before speaking or leaving your seat 1 Connections Discipline Plan 1. Office Referral and Parent Contact Bag of Flour Each student will have to bring in a bag of flour for the parenting unit. They will wrap their bag of flour in duct tape and decorate it. They will then carry it around for a few days as their “baby”. (After the project they can take their flour home). Sewing Students need to purchase their own fabric and thread for their sewing project. If there are any situations in which a student will be unable to obtain fabric and thread please let me know and we will work something out. Fabric can be found at Wal-mart, JoAnns, Hobby Lobby, and Micheals. The best fabric to get is 100% cotton fabric ¾ yard of one fabric piece and ¾ yard of a different fabric piece OR 1 ½ yard of fabric. Wish List Since the county is on a tight budget, I have a limited amount of money I can spend on food for my classes. Donations for the students’ food labs are very helpful in bringing down the cost of food for this class. Below is a list of items that will be used for most of the food labs and other basic supplies we use for various projects in class. Every bit helps!!
