Jeremy was diagnosed with DandyWalker Syndrome at 3 months. He is
blind and has cerebral palsy with severe
muscle flaccidity and developmental
delays in many areas, including feeding.
Special Needs:
Jeremy is not sitting, crawling, or
speaking. He has no vision and requires
night feeding and a special diet.
EI Services:
Occupational therapy, physical therapy,
speech therapy, and a home education
visitor.

I’ve modified the location for these families; students need to determine the services and
supports that will help this family should they have just moved to Ames, IA (service
coordination). The videos hail from Philadelphia – so we pretend they have recently moved to
the Midwest.

for 7 years now she is a full-time
caregiver. Jabril receives Supplemental
Security Income (SSI), and the
children’s father provides child support.
Pearl works full-time as a housekeeper
and home healthcare aide.
Medical Information:
Jabril was born 2 ½ months premature
and was in intensive care for 2 weeks.
He was diagnosed with cerebral palsy
at 3 weeks.
Special Needs:
Nearing 3, Jabril is not yet crawling,
sitting independently, nor toilettrained. He also has language delays.
EI Services:
No services were provided until Jabril
entered an Easter Seal program when
he was 2. Not sure if we have “Easter
Seals” programs here in Ames, IA

Rich works as a management consultant in the
computer industry; his work requires weekly
travel. Peg is full-time caregiver; formerly, a
science journalist
Medical Information:
Kate was born prematurely (34 weeks) with
CHARGE syndrome (acronym for multiple birth
defects affecting the heart, hearing, nasal
passages, vision, esophagus, renal functions,
and physical or cognitive growth). She spent 4
weeks in neonatal intensive care unit and had
surgery after bit for an incomplete esophagus;
currently, she is awaiting major heart surgery
Special Needs:
Kate wears hearing aids, and her vision may
be limited. She has delayed growth and
development, low muscle tone, and is not
sitting or crawling. Her language is also
delayed.
Early Intervention Services:
Videotape Setting:
Kate received home-based speech and
hearing, physical and occupational therapy,
and educational services for 2 years. New,
center-based daily services provided by the
county began 3 weeks before videotaping.

EI Services:
In Philadelphia, Carissa is receiving physical
therapy from an EI
home visitor (educator) who is also a
PT. The family is learning sign language
to facilitate communication. Family
wants early intervention services when
they move to Iowa.
