Infectious diseases and exclusion times
Please be aware that children should not be at pre-school following some illness, even if they are
feeling well. Please check this guidance before returning your child to pre-school, this is to
protect spreading infection and disease to staff, other children, visitors and volunteers.
Illness
Period to be kept away from pre-school
Rashes and skin infections
Chicken pox
5 days from onset of rash
German Measles (Rubella)
6 days from onset of rash
Impetigo
Until lesions have crusted over or healed or 48
hours from the start of antibiotic treatment
Measles
4 days from onset of rash
Scabies
Children may return after 1st treatment
Scarlet fever
24 hours after starting antibiotic treatment
Diarrhoea and vomiting
Diarrhoea
48 hours from last episode
Vomiting
48 hours from last episode
Typhoid
Respiratory Infections
Flu
Until recovered
Tuberculosis
2 weeks following start of treatment
Whooping cough
5 days from start of antibiotic treatment or
21 days from onset of illness if no antibiotic
treatment
Other Infectious Diseases
Diphtheria
Until clinical recovery
Hepatitis A
7 days from onset of jaundice or onset of
symptoms if no jaundice is present
Hepatitis B
Until child feels well
Meningitis
Until clinical recovery
Mumps
Until swelling subsides
Conjunctivitis
Until the infection clears or 24 hours after
starting antibiotic treatment
