We researched certain topics such as taking good notes, effective listening and multitasking to help us learn how these items will affect our grades. This eventually led to what is now a group of improved students. Knowing what to do in order to complete large tasks, and coming out with a variety of different skill sets, Computer Science objective was to mold students into what are good students all together. My Thoughts My own opinion and lessons What does it take to become a good student? Patients with ones self is priority to become an exeptional student. Like many things, becoming a good student does not happen overnight. To improve grades and gian knowledge practice is the key. Practice with note taking, paying attention, and being on time to class will all help you gain the upper hand on becoming a good student. Note taking, paying attention, and being on time to calss are elements worth practicing to gain the upper hand on improving academically. Notes: With these basic skills in mind, the first lesson a good student shows is note taking. By taking clear notes and revising them while the information is still fresh to the mind, learning the material will increase in more ways than one could imagine. Another point worth noting is that the material that is emphasized on the board by the instructor will be crucial to take down on your notes. Being familiar with the main ideas in class, along with revision of the main ideas, note taking is very important. Attention: Paying attention in class is right up there with excellent note taking. With paying attention; phones, listening devices, carless conversation, and good posture will increase attentiveness in class. Texting has become a main form of communication in these recent years and it has only becoming more popular. With the ability to silently contact your friend while in class can cause distraction to only yourself and will often result in divided attention. Along with cellular phones, listening devises can be just as distracting. Not being able to listen to instruction defeats the propose of coming to class. Carrying out conversation will most defiantly create a situation in which one does not allow the instructor to teach his/her lecture as intended. Not only distracting two people, talking and being disruptive will carry long distances andbecome a disruptance to others sitting around you. So by turning off the electronics, and cutting the chatter, these improvements will increase attentiveness in the class room. Posture will also be a great way for you to increase attentiveness. Slouching could cause you to become tired and therefore will make you have the desire to sleep. As long as a student is asleep, no learning will take place. To avoid wanting to sleep, sit up straight and try not to slouch and lean on your arms. Be on time: Being prompt to class will improve your scores as a student. By being on time, you have established and are demonstrating a willingness to learn. Showing up late to class distracts others in the learning environment and this should not be acceptable for a student to do so. Coming to class on time gives you the upper hand you need in order to become a good student. So practicing this will help you get the grove of coming to class and being prompt. These are just three methods of becoming a good student. Conclusion: These steps are what it takes to become a good student. For too long, students haven’t shown the will to learn and I believe that if more students practice with note taking, paying attention and showing up to class on time will become a good student. Having seen and learned from my mistakes, being a good student just takes the will to learn and the three steps that I had mentioned eairlier. Good note taking, paying attention, and being promt to class by practicing them will help you get and advantage on a now acedemic level Effective Listening 3 Questions on Becoming a Good Listener What is an effective listener? To be an effective listener, there are certain and clear ways to achieve a good listener status. One can only do so much when they do not know how to sit attentively and stay wake during class. This section will describe ways on what you can do to listen effectively. One way that you can turn your boggled mind into a focused one is simply turn off all of the electronics you have. When all of the things are turned off, then you will have a higher percent of your brain concentrated on the lecture. Another way that the first site I visited was that you can sit closer to the front. As discussed in our lab, the simple act of sitting in the font can increase a person’s interactive behavior class discussion and lecture. Staying on top of things in class is very important in effective listening and this is a secret to doing just that. Getting to know your professor in a social setting is also a very efficient way of learning how to be attentive in class. By creating a professional relationship with an instructor can help better your understanding of where the lecture is coming from. When I say this, I mean seeing your professor outside of class and starting conversation. Does not have to be about school, but anything going on in the world. Guaranteed the lectures will be less boring and much easier to sit through. What is also important in effective listening is good communication. Knowing how to talk to people can help you understand what to do, or, not to do when listening. Make observations when talking to someone. What are they doing when they are listening to you? How does this make you feel and do you really think they are listening to you? Of course they can hear you, however, hearing and listening can mean two very different things. What can you do to improve it? Try these steps, mix and match to find what works for you. Undoubtedly, you will be surprised by what you can accomplish when the time is set aside to learn how to listen effectively. How can I improve my own listening skills? By taking everything discussed into consideration, I will be more attentive in class, sit towards the front of the room to engage professors and class discussion and be less distracted by electronics. The main idea is to be active in class to gain the information needed to succeed in the class. Discussion: After talking over with my lab partner, effective listening is consistent and has everything to do with good behavior. Comparing notes and talking over what has to be done where conclusions that where very similar. Good Note Taking Skills 3 Questions on Becoming a Good Note Taker What is an effective note taker? Good note taking skills are as simple as any daily assignment. Good note taking skills require the note taker, to be able to comprehend what the instructor is saying, and be able to put that on paper with precision and coherence for later revision. Taking notes also means that a note taker can go back to his or her cites and be able to revise them, while adding to anything that might have been missed during lecture. Personal impediments on good note taking: Now this can range from distractions, to not even knowing where to start. Personal impediments on my note taking usually range from these two objectives. Doing a good job for me means that the phone has to go off and away from me. Otherwise, the phone can draw my attention from the lecture and break my concentration. Another big problem that occurs often is for me knowing where to start in my notes. What should I write down and how do I write it? Long hand or short hand? Sometimes I cannot understand my short hand and then end up writing everything on the board. This is also a problem because I end up behind the presentation and then get stuck in the same situation. What actions will I take to better my note taking skills? To solve my note taking, I will practice symbols and short hand to better my speed and accuracy during lecture time. This, I believe, will create a better understanding for what I should write down. Once I practice short hand, I can also practice turning my phone off and removing myself from distracting situations. This could mean that I might have to take library trips more often than I usually would. Discussion: As discussed in the Lab with my partner, effective steps and things you can do yourself to become a better note taker can be simple if you devote enough time into what you’re trying to accomplish. Doing things such as sitting close to the professor during lectures and removing yourself from distractions can better your coherence of your notes. We both had agreed that using the Collins is an outstanding way to get used to note taking and something that can last for a long time.] Correlation Graph 3 10.00 8.25 8.00 2 6.00 8.20 3 3 9.00 8.25 8.25 8.00 7.00 2 3 10.25 9.50 9.25 9.00 8.25 8.25 2 2 3.5 3 2.5 2 1.5 4.00 1 1 1 2.00 1 0.5 0.00 1 0 2 Hours of sleep 3 4 5 6 7 8 Listeing quality on a scale of 1 to 3 9 Lecture Day Number 10 11 12 Listeing Quality on a Scale of 1 to 3 Sleep Time in Hours for Each Day 12.00 Total Sleep Time in Hours VS. Food now has become more and more proceeds. This makes it hard for recent college students to make good decisions when they choose food. The freshman 15 is a myth that the majority of freshmen students gain 15 pounds that year of college. This in many ways has been proven true, on the other hand has been debunked by nutritionists. The main reason why this may seem true is because college students do not have the resources to make healthy foods. Everything consisting in a freshman’s diet is usually take out or cafeteria food. Of which, is not nutritious at all. Made up of fatty grease and high calorie counts, these food options are all that some students may have available in their resources. A reason why the freshman 15 may not be true is because a lot of students are athletic. Having a regular workout routine can take away from the calorie intake students have. Activities that include a good cardio can really burn the calories. If students are then participating in sports, then calories are really no big concern to those students. In the rare case, students may have a high metabolism. Burning the unnecessary calories when just sitting around is a lucky thing to have. However, does not get the students in the habit of working out. So therefore resulting in the lazy students that have nothing to do but eat and don’t feel the need to work out. Some arguments about multitasking are said to be better for getting more things done with little or less time. This, in fact, is just a fallacy in today’s culture. Talking on the phone while driving, texting or listening to music during a lecture, even cooking while watching television, all are methods and examples of multitasking. All of which, are believed to be done with precision and what do you know, less time. Neurologists conclude that dividing your brain into different areas to do different things is not as effective as to focus your brain on one thing. Same with your PC computer. When you divide your multiprocessor for multiple tasks, it will guaranteed be slower as if you where to focus your computer on one task. This paper has great argument that matches our studies in computer science. What is believed to be a good student is when you have someone that can multitask with no hesitation. Getting things done in little time is on the spot with how students should act today in the academic world. When in fact students really should be focused on one thing at a time when doing their studies. Taking the extra time and completing the work as intended is ARTICLE SUMMARIES Online Research Website #1 Habits of Effective Students This article described topics on what to do to become a good student. As I had described in my paper, practice is emphasized in this article as well. Paying attention, completing homework on time, practice, learning from other students, discovering new ways to check your answers, making short notes and teaching other students are all methods of becoming a better student. The article goes into detail and gives examples of what each topic can do for you. The main idea of this article is to get students to follow the basic steps and they will find that their grades will improve greatly. “The old adage "practice makes perfect" holds true.”i Website #2 Student Behavior This article describes good student conduct with other students and their teachers. Being a good student by not distracting and being respectful to others in the class is just as important as paying attention and taking good notes. Maintaining good discipline with young students will help shape them into what is to be well rounded individuals and therefore has the effect on the grades of the student. On the other side of the spectrum, teachers play just as much of a roll as the actual student. Having a good teacher or instructor will be beneficial to guiding the student to success. Ultimately, success is what the student is trying to achieve. Quote-“In working toward these goals, we believe in a climate of mutual respect between the adults and students in the school.”ii Website #3 On Being a Student To be a good student, is not only learning how to train, but to learn how to become educated. Explaining attitude, academic skills, awareness, and accomplishment, all are factors of being a capable and well rounded student. Of which, these sub categories have been examined and explained to the reader. More of the academic side of being a good student, the article shows us how reading, comprehension, basic math skills, and intuitive thinking are important in being a good student. All of these listed above can have a toll on how the student is affected later in life. Getting a good grasp on school is important to the long run. Students are just expected to “attend” school and are no longer expected to attain good marks in actually learning something. “Work to be educated, not merely trained.”iii Website #4 Effective listening Effective listening will really be imprortant in finding what instuction is being tought, tying into what the instructor whants you to do. This website is all about what needs to have happen in order for on e to listen well in what could potentiially be a distracting setting. As this is site shows its viewers, it is very well put together and helps me in determining what I can do to better my skills. Website #5 Good note taking This site was very clear cut and easy to understand. The main ideas of the site are arranged in bullet form. Everything mentioned in class, and in partner discussion is mentioned here. Simple techniques to show students who are willing to learn about good note taking skills can be found in the third paragraph on the site. What is interesting about this site is that it is directly connected to a university. Showing the students who want to learn about good note taking skills for the university in which they got accepted. “An essential skill for good note taking is good listening.”iv Website #6 Good note taking This is a site where I had to download the article. This article describes the Cornell note taking system and how to use it. It is proven to be very effective. Good note taking skills are the epitome of this system taken and adopted from a brilliant mind. The only bad thing about this system is that the Cornell note taking system is not used in schools as often as it should be. By this not being an everyday system in school, then it can really damage the ability to take good notes in school. “While many students view note taking as an activity conducted simply in lecture, solid note taking skills require preparation and reflection as well.”v This report describes what I have done to improve my effectiveness in this class. Recording what we ate, our sleep time, time spent outside and inside of class, and our final grade showed us how data effects grades.
