General Statement of Duties
Performs semi-skilled and skilled work in the construction, maintenance, and repair of City lands,
facilities, and infrastructures in one or more of the following areas: Cemetery, Forestry, Water/Sewer,
Parks, or Streets/Sanitation; performs directly related work as required.
Distinguishing Features of the Class
The principal function of an employee in this class is to perform a variety of semi-skilled and skilled
work in the construction, maintenance, and repair of City lands, facilities, and infrastructures in one or
more of the following areas: Cemetery, Forestry, Water/Sewer, Parks, or Streets/Sanitation. The work
is performed under the supervision and direction of an assigned supervisor, but considerable leeway is
granted for the exercise of independent judgment and initiative. An employee in this class may act as a
lead worker over seasonal work crews. The nature of the work performed requires that an employee in
this class establish and maintain effective working relationships with assigned supervisors, other City
employees, and the general public. The principal duties of this class are performed in an outdoors
environment with possible exposure to a variety of terrains, weather conditions, hazardous waste, and
airborne pathogens.

Observes safe work methods and makes appropriate use of related safety equipment as required;
Operates and maintains light and medium duty equipment and trucks appropriate to the
functional area of assignment, including backhoes, front-end loaders, pickups, snow plows,
mowers, tractors, brush chippers, and other related equipment;
Operates a variety of hand and power tools and equipment related to work assignment as
instructed;
Maintains work areas in a clean and orderly condition, including securing equipment at the
close of the work day;
Keeps immediate supervisor and designated others accurately informed concerning work
progress, including present and potential work problems and suggestions for new or improved
ways of addressing such problems;

If assigned to Cemetery maintenance:
 Performs a variety of duties for burial services including locating graves using plat maps and
surveyor’s tape, strips sod, operating a backhoe to excavate graves, setting greens and lowering
device, backfilling graves and replaces sod;
 Performs a variety of grounds maintenance duties, including repairing sunken graves, irrigation
of cemetery grounds, maintenance and repair of irrigation systems, mowing, plowing and
sanding roads, snow removal at grave sites, herbicide application, and tree and bush pruning as
necessary;
 Performs a variety of citizen services as requested, including dissemination of information
regarding cemetery policies, rules, and regulations, locating graves sites, and addresses
citizen’s questions or concerns, and takes the appropriate measures to ensure a timely
resolution or citizen satisfaction;
 Serves as a lead worker over seasonal workers to ensure all work is completed in an efficient
and appropriate manner;
 Updates and maintains related records as required, including updating the name database, and
maintaining grave and vehicle maintenance schedules, and compiling data for the fiscal year
budget

If assigned to Park maintenance:









Performs pesticide application as required, including calculating proper amounts of pesticides,
spraying parks and trails, and completing necessary paperwork as required;
Builds and maintains the City’s ice rink to ensure safe conditions for City residents;
Removes snow and maintains City parks’ sidewalks and streets in the winter months to ensure
safe travel for both pedestrians and vehicles, including removing snow from parking lots and
sidewalks, removing snow from foot bridges, and sanding and salting sidewalks as necessary;
Maintains the interior and exterior of park buildings as required, including roofs, siding,
plumbing, and electrical systems as necessary;
Maintains parks in clean and safe condition, including picking up trash and maintaining trash
receptacles, and cleaning and repairing restrooms as necessary;
Paints buildings and restrooms as directed, including staining and oiling signs, garbage racks,
trail markers, benches, and picnic tables;
Installs, inspects and maintains playground equipment to ensure safe operating conditions for
citizens as required;
Installs, maintains, and repairs irrigation systems as necessary;
Maintains the City’s trails to ensure safe and easy access for City residents, including installing
new trail systems, controlling weeds on existing trails, and keeping all trails clear of overgrowth
and debris
If assigned to Forestry maintenance:








Maintains urban forest trees to ensure safe traveling conditions for pedestrians and vehicles,
including pruning and watering, insect and disease diagnosis, herbicide and pesticide
applications, and fertilizing as necessary;
Maintains and updates data for the City’s computerized tree inventory as necessary;
Performs assessments of individual trees to determine potential hazards, including noting
potential targets, removal of targeted trees, and stump-grinding;
Assesses City trees after severe weather conditions to ensure safe conditions for City residents,
including assessing damaged trees, clean-up, and pruning as necessary;
Weeds, mulches, and fertilizes trees, plants, and shrubbery, and prepares soil for planting;
Plants and transplants trees, including installation of bare root, balled and burlap, and
containerized trees according to City ordinance;
Mows, trims, edges, fertilizes, and waters lawns, parks, cemetery, and other landscaped areas of
the City;
Participates in other forestry functions, including maintenance of equipment, tree removals,
sidewalk and site triangle trimming, stump grinding, and other related duties.

If assigned to Water/Sewer Services maintenance:
















Reads commercial and residential water meters on assigned routes, and records subsequent data
in a legible and accurate manner;
Performs visual checks of meter conditions and connections to ensure efficient operations, and
reports damaged or non-functioning meters as required;
Installs water meter systems at new residences and businesses as scheduled;
Removes, installs, and repairs old and new meter systems;
Locates curb boxes to connect or disconnect water services, including making accurate records
of beginning or final readings;
Installs, maintains, repairs, and replaces sewer mains and services;
Inspects water services for compliance with established codes and/or damaged or worn parts,
and makes repairs as necessary;
Digs, shovels, hauls, and unloads soils, backfill, and other materials using various medium to
heavy equipment such as dump trucks, skid steer, loaders, backhoes, and excavators;
Replaces/repairs concrete/asphalt roads, sidewalks, and landscaping after digging as required.
Reads and interprets construction plans and other data to assist in locating water/sewer line
infrastructure for customer use or internal purposes;
Collects final and beginning water reads, and records and reports data as required;
Flushes and maintain manholes and sanitary and storm sewer lines;
Maintains all fire hydrants in the distribution system in a safe and efficient manner, including
replacement and repair, operating and flushing the system, performing winter checks, and
keeping areas around hydrants clear of snow, weeds, and any overgrowth to ensure efficient
access as required;
Maintains all sanitary sewer lines in the collection system by means of flushing and root cutting,
repairs and replaces sanitary sewer lines, makes service taps, runs services to property, and
makes maps, and maintains complete and accurate records of all maintenance activities as
required;
Maintains all departmental equipment to ensure safe and efficient operation, including
backhoes, crusher hoes, flusher truck, dump trucks, and other related vehicles and equipment as
required;
Enters data into the City’s computerized maintenance management systems.
If assigned to Streets/Sanitation maintenance:




Provides for the maintenance and repairs of City streets and roadways, including preparing road
surfaces for patching or overlay, paving, and repairing pot holes, slide spots, and sink holes as
necessary;
Digs, shovels, hauls, and unloads soils, backfill, and other materials;
Constructs, maintains, and repairs City streets;
Maintains City streets in the winter months to ensure safe and efficient traveling conditions for
both pedestrians and vehicles, including plowing and sanding streets, and steam spraying for ice
removal;

Cleans and repairs storm and sewer manholes, lines, and intakes, including flushing out silt
and garbage from sewer manholes, digging up damaged storm sewer lines and replacing pipe as
necessary;
Maintains the City’s alley rights-of-way as necessary, including, trimming, collecting and
hauling brush, compost, or recyclables piles;
Provides year-round creek maintenance to ensure the maintenance of safe water levels,
including keeping creek free of debris, and chopping ice in the winter months as necessary;
Installs, maintains, and repairs street and traffic signs, and paints traffic markings, such as
crosswalks, arrows, and yellow curbs as necessary;
Collects garbage, compost, and/or recyclables on an assigned City route as directed
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
















Substantial knowledge of basic principles and practices of construction, maintenance, and
repair activities in one of the following areas: Cemetery, Streets/Sanitation, Forestry,
Water/Sewer, and/or Parks;
Substantial knowledge of the safe and proper use of basic hand tools, power tools, and other
related construction equipment;
Substantial knowledge of basic safety principles and practices of maintenance and repair
activities;
Substantial knowledge of related Federal, State, and local ordinances and regulations governing
landfill, sanitation, water/sewer, street, forestry, cemetery, and/or parks operations;
Substantial knowledge of the techniques, methods, and materials related to the construction and
maintenance work in the area of assignment;
Substantial knowledge of the maintenance and operation of related light and medium duty
equipment used in functional area of assignment;
Ability to read construction plans for assisting in the locating and tracking of water/sewer lines;
Ability to work outdoors for extended periods of times with exposure to varying weather
conditions;
Ability to efficiently operate related light and medium duty equipment, hand and power tools,
and other equipment related to functional area of assignment;

Acceptable Experience and Training



High School Diploma or GED; and
Some related maintenance experience; or
Any combination of experience and training which provides the equivalent scope of knowledge,
skills, and abilities necessary to perform the work.
Required Special Qualifications



Valid Montana State Driver’s License; specified positions may require an appropriate level
commercial license with appropriate certifications; and
Certifications specific to the functional areas may be required;
Pre-employment drug testing may be required.

Sufficient clarity of speech and hearing or other communication capabilities, with or without
