The Office of Student Leadership and Engagement will: Plan, implement, and assess effective, experiential learning opportunities for UNCW students to engage, lead, and serve in the fraternity and sorority, campus, and local communities Teach and learn with UNCW students to further develop individuals’ knowledge, skills, and capacities Intentionally explore and reflect upon engagement, leadership, service and the fraternity and sorority experience through a socially just perspective Create and maintain innovative, collaborative partnerships with campus community, and national constituents in order to best serve the needs of students, fraternities and sororities, the region, and the State of North Carolina Challenge individuals and groups to strive for excellence in all aspects of the student experience Celebrate the integrity, growth, and accomplishments of UNCW students and fraternities and sororities and their commitment to lifelong learning, engagement, leadership, service, scholarship, values, and accountability Page 3 Why Accreditation Matters To improve the management and quality of fraternity and sorority chapters at the University of North Carolina Wilmington. This program will allow chapters to complete a self-evaluation of the previous year and show the chapter where growth is needed. The accreditation program will allow the University to recognize those organizations that achieve excellence. The cover page should be the chapter profile. Fill it out completely. Exceeding in the area of Scholarship Academic excellence is the highest priority at UNCW. It is important that each chapter encourages and supports each member’s academic goals. A strong scholarship program within organizations helps to improve the status of each chapter and the fraternity/sorority system. Chapters are expected to: Meet the UNCW all-male or all-female average GPA and strive to significantly exceed those markers Maintain and implement a scholarship program for their members Utilize faculty/staff advisor to assist in scholarship programming Exceeding in the area of Leadership Being part of a fraternity or sorority provides one of the greatest opportunities for building of leadership skills for all of its members. A strong positive image of the fraternity and sorority system can only come from a group of strong leaders. Chapters are expected to: Encourage every member to participate in student engagement experiences outside of the chapter (i.e. other extracurricular activities) Plan and implement an officer transition program Attend leadership programs sponsored by the Office of Student Leadership and Engagement, UNCW, national organizations, or by national governing bodies Support the leadership of and participate fully in IFC, NPHC, PHC, and the Unified Greek Council. Exceeding in the area of Service & Philanthropy Page 4 Being a part of the fraternity and sorority system allows members to participate in community engagement through service and philanthropy activities that not only benefit the members of the community, but chapter members as well. Chapters are expected to: Participate in at community service projects throughout the year Participate in community service projects sponsored by the Office of Student Leadership and Engagement Participate in philanthropic events to raise money for charitable causes Exceeding in the area of Chapter Operations In order for chapters to survive and grow stronger, they must continually provide experiences that will enhance the unique feeling of fellowship for all of their members. Chapters are expected to: Ensure accountability for individual members and the organization as a whole Participate in non-alcoholic social activities with other chapters Display pride and live values with regard to the fraternity and sorority community Page 5 Submission for Accreditation The UNCW Fraternity and Sorority Accreditation Packet is due by January 29, 2016. Failure to submit your organization’s packet will result in immediate suspension of all chapter activities, as well as notification to your National Organization. **5 points will be deducted from your chapter’s total for each calendar day it is late** There are 4 sections of the UNCW Greek Accreditation Program you need to complete. Read each item carefully, answering each item fully and attaching any necessary documents. When attaching documents, include them in the section they support. If you are unsure about an item and how it relates to your organization, please ask for clarification. **If binders do not follow the proper order, you may lose points!!** Each section should be sectioned off by dividers. You may use the same binder/ dividers as the previous year; however, please make sure to remove all old materials from the binder before submitting. You do not have to include pages 1-9 of this packet in your binder. Please be sure to place the scoring rubric for each section in its appropriate section and leave the lines blank for scoring. Please be mindful when requesting documents from others (i.e. Coordinator of Student Leadership and Engagement for Fraternities and Sororities, National Organization, Advisor, etc.) and do not wait until the last minute. Any item requesting a letter MUST have an actual signature. All supporting documents should be labeled with the number they are supporting (i.e. 1A should be written in the top corner). All documentation for bonus points should say BONUS. If an item indicates it will be verified by our office, no documentation is necessary; however, you may want to include any valid information (i.e. if you have members of your organization on a council executive board, you may want to make a list of these individuals and their positions). The information should be neat, organized, and easy to view. The final results will be reported on the UNCW Fraternity and Sorority website. Page 6 Chapter Evaluation Throughout the academic year, every organization must submit the following forms with documentation showing that the requirements and expectations have been met. All submissions will be reviewed by the Coordinator of Student Leadership and Engagement for Fraternities and Sororities. All national headquarters will be advised of this accreditation process and informed about the chapter’s accreditation standing. We are confident that every chapter will meet and far exceed these areas of excellence. The Accreditation Packets will be used to determine the recipient of the Vice Chancellor’s Cup of Academic Excellence (highest scholarship section for each council). Should there be a tie, all bonus points will be redacted and the group with highest score will receive the award. Should there still be a tie, the organization with the highest increase in their chapter GPA from spring 2015 to fall 2015 will be receive the award. The Bradley Cup Chapter of the year will also be determined by the accreditation packet (entire accreditation score). If a tie should ensue, all bonus points will be redacted and the group with the highest score will be the recipient. If this does not break the tie, the organization with the highest operations section score will be the recipient. Expectations for Fraternity and Sorority Accreditation Sections All sections of the excellence packet have a maximum point total of twenty (25) points. For each of the four sections the accreditation levels are located below. Each chapter must achieve a minimum of 12.5 points to be accredited in each section. Documentation pieces must be clearly marked to identify the corresponding requirements. It is expected that each chapter request documents from the proper administrators before submitting the Fraternity and Sorority Accreditation Packet. Documents will not be provided once the packet has been submitted, nor should it be assumed that documents will be inserted in the packet that have not been requested, yet are required. Please expect 3-5 business days to receive materials once a request has been made.
