Mrs. Van Eck WCS Art Grade 8 Lesson Title: Glass Bottles with Colored Pencils Lesson Link: Students will explore how underlying messages are communicated to the public often by distorting reality through the use of subtle symbols and color. State Standards: 25.A.3d Identify and describe the elements of value, perspective and color schemes; the principles of contrast, emphasis and unity, and the expressive qualities of thematic development and sequence. 27.A.3b Compare and contrast how the arts function in ceremony, technology, politics, communication and entertainment. 27.B.3 Know and describe how artists and their works shape culture and increase understanding of societies, past and present. Objectives: 1. Students will be able to explain and create the size, shape and color of 5 different glass bottles. 2. Students will communicate an idea through the use of hidden symbols and color. 3. Students will express an understanding of different colored pencil techniques: layering, blending, varying pencil pressure, and be able to develop a picture through the use of these techniques. 4. Students will demonstrate understanding of the principles of emphasis, balance and unity. Criteria: 1. 2. 3. 4. Successful in communicating the size, shape and color of five glass bottles Identifies reflection shapes in glass bottles and distorts them to communicate an idea Successfully uses different colored pencil techniques to develop the picture Demonstrates an understanding of design principles: emphasis, balance, unity Teacher Resources: 5 colored glass bottles DVD by Prismacolor that demonstrates colored pencil techniques Samples of advertising with hidden messages: Some examples might be: Materials: Pencils Colored pencils Blending sticks 10” x14” white sulphite Introduction: Teacher will discuss how advertising affects our lives and show examples of well know advertising symbols to see if students can identify them and then recognize the subtle feelings they create. Day 1 Class will discuss how different symbols have been used throughout history to communicate ideas. Students will brainstorm what kind of symbol they might use in their drawing to create a message. The remaining class time will be used to watch the film on colored pencil techniques. Day 2 Teacher will set up a display of five colored glass bottles, each one a different size, shape and color. Class will look at bottles and note the differences they see between them. Teacher will draw attention to the different shapes of color and reflection within each of the bottles and explain the importance of incorporating them into the picture to create the illusion of glass. Teacher will explain that the reflections in at least one of the bottles are to be distorted into the symbol each student has decided to use. Students will begin drawing the bottles, noting their placement and the differences in size and shape between them. Days 3 – 5 Students will continue to develop their drawing by using various colored pencil techniques to create the reflected colors in the glass bottles. Students will add a background to further communicate the idea behing the symbols used in the reflections on the bottles. Day 6 Class critique/ Self grade/written reflection
