The Fund for Public Health in New York, Inc. (FPHNY) is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that is dedicated to the advancement of the health and well-being of all New Yorkers. To this end, FPHNY implements programs to address pressing public health needs, fosters private sector support to enhance health and health care, and helps educate the public regarding the protection of individual, family, and community health.
PROGRAM OVERVIEW
The Office of School Health (OSH) is a joint Program of the Department of Education and the Department of Health and Mental
Hygiene responsible for promoting the health of the 1.3 million school children enrolled in approximately 1,800 public and non
'public schools in the New York City.
The OSH Adolescent Health Program manages, among other programs, in-school reproductive health programs tailored for high school students. These programs include the 1) Connecting Adolescents to Comprehensive Healthcare (CATCH) Program which offers in-school pregnancy tests, emergency contraception, hormonal contraception and referrals for reproductive health care by
OSH staff in the school medical rooms; 2) School –Based Health Clinics, which offer comprehensive primary care services that include mental health and reproductive health as critical components of adolescent health care services
3) Chancellor’s Initiative which is a $30 Million project to develop and build 20 SBHC’s over the course of 3 years.
POSITION OVERVIEW
The OSH received a 3-year grant ( funded through December 2015 ) to implement a novel Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention initiative (APP). This grant-funded initiative includes offering expanded direct reproductive health services in select high school sites using Nurse Practitioners and Health Educators, enhancing services in existing CATCH sites, improving services in low performing SBHC sites and collaborating with consultant and other city agencies to increase access to reproductive services for teens in foster care. Under the direction of the Adolescent Health Project Director will be responsible for the day-to-day reproductive health education activities at multiple sites.
DUTIES
Responsibilities will include but not be limited to:

Conduct health education sessions (classroom, small group or individual) to student population with special emphasis on adolescent sexuality and reproductive health.

Develop relationships between the medical rooms and community-based clinics, facilitating adolescents in obtaining reproductive health care.

Assist follow-up of missed appointments to the nurse, nurse practitioner or OSH physician.

Conduct workshops in adolescent sexuality and parent/adolescent communication to adults as requested.

Assist in maintaining, organizing and monitoring inventory of all educational materials.

Develop effective means for publicizing the reproductive health education program through the school community. Utilize appropriate multi-media teaching aids (e.g. audio-visual) in both publicizing and conducting the education programs.

Assist in the planning, organizing and implementation of special health education events and campaigns within the school campuses (Teen Pregnancy Prevention Month, Healthy Relationship Month, World AIDS Day, etc).

Maintain effective professional relationships with school staff, colleagues and supervisors to meet the needs of the program.
Assist in identifying and resolving problems and issues of concern.

Maintain personal knowledge in order to provide up-to-date information and improved care to clients.

Assist in all daily administrative aspects of program management as guided by the clinical staff (nurse, nurse practitioner or physician).

Contribute to project program planning and evaluation by maintaining up-to-date records, filling out required statistical forms and entering program data into any electronic systems as required.

Attend in-service training and conferences as required.

Perform other related responsibilities as required.
QUALIFICATIONS
 Bachelor’s degree in health education or related field from a recognized college or university with a minimum of 5 years’ experience or a Master’s degree in a related field with a minimum of 3 years’ experience which should be in the reproductive health field.

Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred.


Experience working with adolescents. Knowledge of adolescent sexuality and health issues preferred.

Work effectively and enthusiastically with adolescents, adults, professionals and other personnel from a wide range of cultural, social and economic backgrounds.

Excellent writing and oral presentation skills
