Autumn 1 – MTP - Year 3 Title: From Croods to Celts – the early journey of Man Timescale: 7 weeks Rationale: Welcome to the dawn of civilisation! When mankind first got tired of hiding in holes and stepped out into the light. This term the children will be learning all about Stone Age man – how they lived, what they ate and what they did for fun. We will travel along the timeline of human evolution to the Bronze Age, as we discover tools, fire and even the wheel. As we progress through the ages, we will look at the life of a Bronze Age woman and follow her descendants towards the Iron Age and the warring clans of the Celts. Nearer the end of this topic, the children will venture out through fields and ancient woods to see the Longstone in Mottistone, a Stone Age monument. For Literacy, the children will be recounting their holidays, with a creative twist. They will also learn letter-writing skills and write a letter describing all they have done in Year 3. They will then get to post this letter home. Finally, we will again write a recount, based on the familiar setting of the Isle Of Wight and using our visit to the Longstone. However in our story, we will be transported back in time… Our topic will continue in many of the core subjects. As a class, we will look at the earliest forms of art – Stone Age cave paintings and try to recreate them in the classroom. The children will also look at artefacts from these time periods and try and capture them in still life. For music, we will recreate the original ‘rock’ band, with music using stone age instruments. Welcome to Star Class. The Big Questions: Hook: 1. How did Stone Age Man survive? What did they eat? Where did they live? 2. What was the world like during these periods of time? 3. What changes lead to the Bronze Age and then on to the Iron Age? How did people live during period from the Stone age –Iron age? The children will be guided through the journey of Early Man with the help of Dreamworks ‘The Croods’ and the Horrible History Team. Take-Away Task: As you walk around your garden look at the rocks and soil found there. Make observations about the colour, texture and general appearance. This can be recorded in a variety of ways e.g. drawings, photographs, a collection but it must include some writing. It could also include looking at different rocks and soils around the Island. Imagine that these are the only resources available. What tools could you make out of them? Draw pictures and explain your ideas.
