DEMOLITION PROCEDURE FOR BIN6001320 Routes 5 & 20 over Cattaraugus Creek Spans 1 & 2 (west and center spans) Loose paint will be scraped off the steel and disposed of. Remove strong back girder from deck. *What is the bridge capacity without this support in place. Remove the asphalt overlay and bridge rail. Break up the concrete deck with an excavator with a hydraulic impact breaker. Drop the entire steel portion of the superstructure to the ground by shearing the critical members so that it collapses. This can be aided by breaking concrete out from under the bearings to direct the direction of the demolition. The steel will be sheared and disposed of. The second span will be removed and disposed of in a similar manner. Span 3 (east span) Loose paint will be scraped off the steel and disposed of. Additionally, locations that will be flame cut will have the paint removed by vacuum needle scaling methods. Remove strong back girder from deck. Remove the asphalt overlay and bridge rail. Remove the sidewalk. Working through the truss members, the concrete sidewalk will be removed in sections to minimize the debris falling into the creek. The steel portions of the sidewalk overhang will be cut off and removed. Install temporary pedestals under the end floor beams at pier 2 and the east abutment near the north bearings. Remove all overhead bracing. See RT528C crane. Begin removing the concrete deck starting at pier 2 and working toward the east abutment. This will be accomplished by line breaking the precast concrete slabs so that they can be removed in sections with little debris falling below. As sections are completed, remove all of the floor beams and stringers except the two end floor beams. Tie down the end floor beams over the temporary pedestals. Install guy cables from the top of the south truss to the pier and abutment. Tip the north truss to the north by cutting the end floor beam between the pedestal and the temporary pedestal. Drag to the west, shear up, and remove. Tip the south truss to the north. Drag to the west, shear up, and remove.
