Glapton Lane Nottingham NG11 8EA Tel: 0115 9152936 www.glapton.com Friday 20th December 2013 Dear Parent/Carer, Christmas is finally here! By the time you read this letter the children will have broken up for the Christmas holidays and will be counting down the sleeps to the big day. It has been a busy autumn term culminating in a really busy couple of Christmas weeks. The Nativity performance from our younger children was lovely and Key Stage Two children sang beautifully in their Christmas Concert. We took the whole school to see Peter Pan and a brilliant time was had by everyone. Well done to Lara and Ethan who were picked from the audience to go on stage. This week the children have visited St Mary’s for a church service, had Christmas Cracker day with lots of maths problems to solve, our resident author Elizabeth Baguley visited and worked with the children in Hazel, Sycamore and Oak classes. We’ve had Christmas dinner, Christmas parties and a Christmas jumper day and hopefully you will have received a handmade Christmas card from your children which is now sitting on your fireplace for all to see. In addition to all the nice seasonal things that children have done we have had a term of real hard work. Lots of new members of staff joined us in September to cover for all our teachers on maternity leave. The leadership team have worked hard to help the new teachers settle in and get used to ‘The Glapton Way’ of doing things. We have very high expectations and want the very best for all our pupils. Every member of staff in school has been observed teaching over the last term. Every child’s literacy, numeracy and topic books have been looked at. All the children have been assessed and meetings have been held with all teachers to talk about plans for next term to make sure the children make even more progress. Over the course of the Autumn term we have spent £10,644.64 on intervention sessions to help ensure the children reach their full potential - £4159.58 during Autumn 1 and £6485.06 during Autumn 2. We have planned extra support sessions for children for next term. Mrs Lang, our Parent Support Officer, will contact you in the new year to let you know if your child has been chosen for extra support, what we are doing at school and how you can help at home. Next term, the children return to school on Monday 6th January. We have a six week half term finishing on Thursday 13th February, with Friday 14th being an Inset day for staff. Miss Edwards will be returning to us for half a term and will work with Miss Leonardi and Miss Hobbs in Elm class. Miss Billau will leave us. She said, ‘Thank you to all the staff, parents and pupils at Glapton for all the support I have received. I’ve learnt so much and look forward to using all these skills in the future.” Miss Miller will now lead Juniper class. She will be supported in class by Miss Smith and a third teaching assistant. Miss Herd will continue to work with Miss Miller to plan work for the children across both classes and assess pupil progress. We have a busy half term planned and will hold a mid-year parents evening after the February holiday. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank all our supportive parents. All our parents who complete homework, listen to children read, bring them to school every day, on time and talk to them about their day when they collect them. It is much easier for us to help the children reach their full potential when we work together. On behalf of all the staff and governors at The Glapton Academy, I wish you all a very happy Christmas and a peaceful New Year. I look forward to seeing you all in January. Kind regards, Ms Ellis Headteacher
