ANIMAL CARE MANAGER GENERAL SUMMARY Classification: Exempt/Salary Starting Salary: $26,000 per year Reports to: Shelter Manager & Director of Operations The Animal Care Manager of the HSMC shelter will work to direct activities that ensure the shelter operates in accordance with HSMC policies as it provides proper care and humane treatment for all animals living at the shelter. He/she will direct shelter staff to ensure optimal care and coverage for the animals. REQUIREMENTS Education and Experience: Must be a Certified Vet Tech. Previous management experience, a plus. Skills: Must love animals. Proven interpersonal skills. Administrative skills with supervisory skills preferred. Must be able to work well with others and deal with conflict in a professional and constructive manner. Meet physical requirements: sit, stand, kneel, bend over frequently, and be able to lift over 50lbs. Computer skills with proficiency in data entry. PetPoint a plus. Candidates must possess a valid driver’s license and have dependable transportation. Must achieve or maintain office and computer skills. The Society will pay for two classes annually, as approved by the HSMC Board of Directors, to upgrade animal care knowledge. TYPICAL DUTIES Responsible for processing adoptions of animals from the shelter, including proper documentation and adherence to HSMC policies and procedures. Supervise staff on animal care matters. Responsible for contacting vendors and suppliers to schedule repairs and maintenance within the financial and other guidelines as imposed by the Director of Operations and the Board of Directors. Oversees maintenance of accurate, up-to-date comprehensive health records, cage cards, and shelter statistics. Develops and maintains record keeping practices for controlled pharmaceutical substances, tests, and medical equipment for the shelter. Assures that adopters are provided with basic pet ownership information, educates the public on pet related issues and performs adoption counseling. Prepare monthly report to be presented to the Board of Directors, including monthly shelter statistics. Must be present at Board meetings on the 2nd Wednesday of every month at 6:30pm. Serves as the liaison between the HSMC and Monroe County Animal Control. Assesses and selects animals to be transferred to the shelter from animal control. Works directly with the Lead Animal Care Tech, other shelters, and rescues to develop a transfer program for hard to adopt animals and to receive animals when our shelter has space. Coordinates the HSMC Foster Program. Recruits new fosters and maintains a close relationship with those fosters throughout the relationship. Oversees the care of the animals at the shelter: including proper feeding, exercising, watering, and cleaning of cages. Ensures all animals are up-to-date on vaccinations. Ensures all animals procedures, such as fecal and blood tests have been administered. Ensures all animals are spayed or neutered before adoption. Works with Humane Ohio and Ark on the spay/neuter program available to the shelter and to the public. Maintain proper paperwork for Humane Ohio, and working with the clinic staff and the public to convey procedures, schedules, and more. Participates with the PR/Shelter Manager and the Director of Operations in the training of HSMC employees and volunteers. Ensures that instruction is provided to shelter staff with regard to safety practices in caring for/handling animals. Monthly or bi-weekly educational training meetings with all HSMC staff on updates in the medical field or to review diseases, canine behavior, etc. Acts as a representative of the HSMC to the community and promotes the society’s programs and mission in all actions. Hold regular monthly staff meetings with the PR/Shelter Manager to keep staff informed and educated on HSMC safety practices and policies, and to learn from their experiences in an effort to improve operations. Oversee that statistics are gathered, maintained and reported to all required governing bodies, including but not limited to, the Department of Agriculture. Other duties as assigned. Page 2
