Answer Options Global Health Enrichment Elective - ELEC 5047 Preparing for Global Health Work - INTD 4030 International Medicine - MEDI 7003 None Other (please specify) What session(s) were most useful/helpful? 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 I think that the various infectious disease lectures were helpful, especially pertaining to skin diseases, as this is what we saw/treated a lot of. Sessions on infectious diseases Presentations from the previous Ethiopia team Learning about cholera transmission Public health conditions. None jump to mind. Most useful information for work at our site came from last year's Ethiopia team. N/A What could have been provided that would have been of benefit for your elective site? 1 2 3 4 5 As a first year, it would have been nice to have had an introduction to what drugs we would mostly be using (basic pharmacology as well as how to dose, as we did run our own pharmacy.) How to properly and efficiently run a clinic. Also, a description of the specific diseases we would see in the area. more knowledge of the language Better preparation for diagnosing what diseases we saw... A brief overview of likely diseases we would see and treat (although we had plenty of time to do this on site). What suggestions do you have to improve student preparation for international electives? 1 2 3 4 Better describe to the students what to expect in the clinic and what they are expected to do. I did not feel adequately prepared initially. More practical classes with focused training on the tests/exams students will be preforming, less info type sessions where others trips are narrated get more advice from students who have gone on the same trip from previous years More preparation on diseases and diagnoses. 5 6 Lots of communication with the previous year's group. Thorough application process to ensure that students who can adapt and appreciate all the good and bad aspects of being in Africa for a month are selected for the trip. I guess the online lectures, but I didn't have a chance to watch any before going. I wasn't bothered by this (I didn't feel unprepared) Accommodation, Meals & Travel What accommodations did you have? Answer Options Not Very Fair Fine Good Very Elective Site Please describe your duties during your elective rotation? 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 Running a clinic, complete with Triage, Diagnostic stations, and Pharmacy. The students switched between pharmacy, triage, and medical stations. The pharmacy was in charge of passing out the drugs and describing to the patient how to take them. Triage took care of blood pressure, temperature, weight, trachoma screening, etc. The medical stations questioned the patient and did diagnostic exams, then presented to the doctor. That said, I did learn an immense amount about many infectious diseases, especially dermatological, and the value of hand/skin sanitation. The lack of infrastructure in the country makes it the perfect breeding ground for preventative illnesses. Majority of the children had infectious diseases that were easily treatable and preventable. I learned a great deal about tropical medicine and infectious disease, particularly in regards to dermatological issues and parasitic infestation. Not all health centers have soap or running water That there is still a lot of room for improvement The area seriously lacks necessary medical supplies/infrastructure Not much from anyone except our NGO leaders: they where very aware as to what was going on the in the community and could explain how things were and how they came to be that way What awareness of the host country’s health care system did you acquire? 1 2 3 4 5 I got a good feel for what rural Ethiopian medicine is like. Luckily, we were also able to visit several hospitals in the capitol city of Addis Ababa, giving us an awareness of the major urban hospitals. There is not a good government health program and simply a lack of medical care in the country. Ethiopia in particular has a lot of corruption in the health care system, which makes it difficult for normal citizens to get proper care. Through our work with the health clinic in Ethiopia and shadowing various physicians in Addis Ababa, I learned a great deal about Ethiopia's health care program. It was incredible and humbling to see the disparities between our respective systems. Many of them don’t understand the important of hygiene or are unable to attain clean water and soap That they don't put a priority on health care or public health 6 7 Phenomenally well trained and skilled doctors in Addis Ababa hospitals we visited It’s free for rare diseases or those dangerous for the community, but limited access and impossible transportation requirements make it impossible for most to access if desired. Children were a lot tougher than Americans Would you recommend this elective site/program to another student? Answer Options Not likely Somewhat unlikely Not sure Somewhat likely Very likely Response Percent Response Count 0.0% 0.0% 0.0% 0.0% 100.0% 0 0 0 0 7 Please explain: 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 I gained a significant amount of knowledge about both rural and urban medicine in Ethiopia. Moreover, we were able to become immersed in the culture of the small village of Aleta Wondo by getting to know many people in the village, visiting local homes, and working at the local school. It was invaluable and one of the more profound and educational experiences of my life. My time in Ethiopia was truly one of the best experiences in my life. I learned so much from the people and mentors. I will carry these memories throughout my life and they will help shape my career as a doctor. This was a life altering experience that I won't ever forget, I'd recommend it to anyone willing and excited about trying new things the beauty of the county and the people, along with a great opportunity ot learn and help others Life changing experience Easy, comfortable living. Playing with all the kids at the school is a great time. The best trip the school offers at this point in time What suggestions do you have to improve this elective site/program? 1 2 3 4 5 My advice would be to better plan out the time not spent in clinic. Prepare the students better for what they should expect at the clinic. Also, guide them more in the selection of drugs and supplies. Fixing these few problems will probably alleviate a lot of unnecessary stress. More communication and transparency with the group that went the year before us None An additional doctor to accompany us: the more the better Any other comments? 1 2 3 NA I absolutely loved it and wish to go back terribly. I went with a great group of people
