PRESS RELEASE May 2012 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Sir Mark Elder and Yan Pascal Tortelier Conduct RNCM Orchestras Internationally renowned conductors Sir Mark Elder CBE and Yan Pascal Tortelier will conduct RNCM orchestras in two unmissable concerts this summer. On Friday 22 June, Sir Mark Elder CBE, Music Director of the Hallé, will conduct the RNCM Chamber Orchestra in a programme featuring Mendelssohn’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Stravinsky’s Dumbarton Oaks, Weber’s Overture to Oberon and Debussy’s Syrinx. The concert will raise funds for Future Talent, a charity founded and directed by HRH The Duchess of Kent, the RNCM’s founding President and a strong advocate for music education in the UK. Speaking of her association with the RNCM, The Duchess of Kent said: ‘I could never put into words adequately the affection I feel for and the pride I have in the RNCM! My association with the College is about friendship, commitment - all of us are totally dedicated to the welfare and musical progress of every student - loyalty and pride. Proud of each individual young musician as their skills grow and develop. Proud of their tutors who instil self-belief. Proud too of every member of staff - each playing a vital part in the smooth running of the College.’ Popular TV and stage actor Simon Trinder, who has performed in many plays with the Royal Shakespeare Company and who will appear in the BBC’s July adaptation of Richard II, Hollow Crown, with Patrick Stewart and David Suchet, will narrate Mendelssohn’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Rarely performed complete, this music beautifully captures the elfin atmosphere of Shakespeare’s play, providing an evocative series of musical tableaux, linked together by narrated extracts from the play. Tickets for this concert cost £20/£15, and are available from the RNCM box office on 0161 907 5555 or online at www.rncm.ac.uk and all proceeds go to www.futuretalent.org Moving to next month, French conductor Yan Pascal Tortelier will lead the RNCM Symphony Orchestra in a striking concert at Manchester’s Bridgewater Hall on Thursday 5 July. Marking the end of the College’s Nørth season, the concert will feature Vaughan Williams’ Serenade to Music (conducted by Gergely Madaras, RNCM Junior Fellow and ENO Charles Mackerras Fellow in Conducting), Sibelius’ Violin Concerto in D minor Op 47, and The Planet, Holt’s brilliantly inventive and famous score. Tickets cost £17/£14, and are available from the RNCM box office on 0161 907 5555 or online at www.rncm.ac.uk For more information on either event, or to request interviews and images, please contact Liz Rowley, PR and Media Relations Office, on 0161 907 5369 or email liz.rowley@rncm.ac.uk - Ends - Notes to Editors: In addition to being one of the UK’s top conservatoires, the RNCM is recognised as one of the North West’s leading performing venues offering a large Concert Hall, Theatre, a smaller Studio Theatre and the Carole Nash Recital Room.
