Norwegian pianist and composer Gustavsen describes this latest release, Extended Circle, as ‘being the completion of a double circle of trilogies’ - the first albums being in the classic trio format of piano-bass-drums, followed later by recordings for extended ensemble and quartet. This latest recording concludes his second trilogy. Tord's new material is pointing forwards in musical openness and creativity, while at the same time clearly picking up the quietness and grounded sensuality of the hugely successful trio albums. It includes several pure trio pieces, and is embracing anew the almost minimalistic simplicity and striking Nordic-Caribbean-Gospel-Impressionist-Bluesy touch that so many people came to love in Gustavsen’s début album. Paradoxically, the new album includes a dynamic contrast and is perhaps even more stylistic than before; but it still feels like an integrated musical journey, with transitions and album ‘composition’ clearly being art-forms in themselves, carried out in close creative co-operation between Tord Gustavsen and ECM’s legendary producer Manfred Eicher. The band has toured extensively in the UK, Germany, France, Scandinavia, the US and Canada with their highly successful previous release The Well (2012). Since then, its repertoire for the upcoming album has evolved and developed during hours of intense live playing at concerts and festivals throughout the world. ‘Gustavsen's tunes are hypnotically strong... masterpiece of the understated’ (The Guardian) ‘A trilogy [that] could be the most essential jazz document of the last ten years. Sublime.’ (The Independent) Tord Gustavsen Ensemble can be seen at the RNCM Theatre, Manchester, on Saturday 15 March at 8pm. Tickets cost £18, £16 and £14, and concessions are available.
