Led by French choreographer Mourad Merzouki, the company of 11 young men from the favelas of Rio de Janeiro, has quickly become an international sensation. Northrop Presents CCN de Créteil et du Val-de-Marne / Compagnie Käfig Tue, Mar 10, 7:30 pm Carlson Family Stage Correria Agwa CCN de Créteil et du Val-de-Marne / Compagnie Käfig and Merzouki have created two high-energy pieces that combine acrobatics, capoeira, hip-hop, and samba in an unforgettable evening of explosive dance. Correria (running) plunges us into a frantic, hectic race just like the one that governs our daily lives. Agwa (water) is all about water, at once a vital component of our bodies, a precious, vital, even natural resources to be economized and preserved, and a symbol of renewal. A major figure on the hip-hop scene since the early 1990s, Merzouki works at the junction of many different disciplines: to his exploration of all hip-hop styles, he adds circus, martial arts, find arts and live music. Without losing sight of hip-hop movement’s roots, of its social and geographical origins, this multidisciplinary approach opens up new horizons and reveals complete new outlooks.
