Rodin
Boris Eifman’s new ballet, Rodin, is dedicated to the life and creative work of the great sculptor
Auguste Rodin and his apprentice, lover, and muse, Camille Claudel. The drama of their
passionate relationship is told through their work to their breakup, which dealt a deathblow to
Camille’s mental health and marked the beginning of her destruction.
Eifman’s Rodin is a comprehensively creative study of just how tragic the lives of geniuses may
be. By resorting to the uniquely plastique of the modern psychological ballet that was so
brilliantly mastered by the choreographer in his other productions (Onegin, The Seagull, Anna
Karenina, Russian Hamlet, etc.), Boris Eifman not only offers a new interpretation of the world
of human passions studied masterfully by Rodin and Claudel, but creates a picture of the
insoluble mystery of the creative process.
As director, Eifman makes his audiences not just appreciate the beauty of the ‘dance fabric’ of
his performances, but empathize in the scenic action. The company demonstrates brilliant
technique and a gift for the transformation and physicality that fascinates the western
audience.
