Literacy The children will be studying a book called ‘Pompeii’. Through this the children will develop their descriptive writing through first person recounts and story writing. They will also study newspaper reports and write a report of their own about the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. Tip: The more factual knowledge the children have about Pompeii and the eruption of the volcano, the more lively their writing will be. Helping them to research this at home will really support their classwork. Art/DT This term we have an Art focus. The children will use different materials to explore tones of light and dark, then produce their own picture of an erupting volcano. Geography/History Geography – The children will use atlases to locate countries and volcanoes, understand how localities have changed due to erosion, discover what causes a volcano to erupt and look at earthquakes. History – The children will study the History of Pompeii and understand what a Roman town would have looked like. Maths This term the children will be moving on to written methods of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. They will also be learning how to read time, which is always a good skill to practice at home. Tip: You could ask your child to help you with evening routines; ask them to tell you when it is time for dinner or time for bed. Big Maths will continue to happen on a weekly basis. Please continue to encourage your child to practice their times tables. YEAR 3 Spring 1 Newsletter ‘Tremors’ PSHE In PSHE the theme is ‘Going for Goals. The children will identify personal goals and set targets as to how to achieve them. RE In RE we will be studying the Torah. The children will learn about the holy book and why it is important to people. Science Our topic this term is rocks. The children will be learning about the different types of rocks and their uses in everyday life. The children will be exploring the physical features of rocks and undertaking their own investigations to explore the best type of rock to use for an outdoor school statue! Following this, they will look at what happens to rocks over time and how this contributes to making soil. Finally, the children will be looking at fossils and learning about the process of fossilisation. Tip: If you are out and about with your child, ask them what they can see around them which is made from rock. Music This term we will be singing Three Little Birds by Bob Marley with a focus on Reggae music. We will be improvising using our voices and instruments and composing a section to be played within the song using the pentatonic scale. We will also learn how to recognise the style of the music.
