Literacy
The children will be studying a book called
‘Pompeii’. Through this the children will develop
their descriptive writing through first person
recounts and story writing. They will also study
newspaper reports and write a report of their own
about the eruption of Mount Vesuvius.
Tip: The more factual knowledge the children have
about Pompeii and the eruption of the volcano,
the more lively their writing will be. Helping them
to research this at home will really support their
classwork.
Art/DT
This term we have an Art focus. The children will
use different materials to explore tones of light
and dark, then produce their own picture of an
erupting volcano.
Geography/History
Geography – The children will use atlases to locate
countries and volcanoes, understand how localities
have changed due to erosion, discover what
causes a volcano to erupt and look at earthquakes.
History – The children will study the History of
Pompeii and understand what a Roman town
would have looked like.
Maths
This term the children will be moving on to written
methods of addition, subtraction, multiplication
and division. They will also be learning how to read
time, which is always a good skill to practice at
home.
Tip: You could ask your child to help you with
evening routines; ask them to tell you when it is
time for dinner or time for bed.
Big Maths will continue to happen on a weekly
basis. Please continue to encourage your child to
practice their times tables.

learning about the different types of rocks and their
uses in everyday life. The children will be exploring
the physical features of rocks and undertaking their
own investigations to explore the best type of rock to
use for an outdoor school statue! Following this, they
will look at what happens to rocks over time and how
this contributes to making soil. Finally, the children
will be looking at fossils and learning about the
process of fossilisation.
Tip: If you are out and about with your child, ask
them what they can see around them which is made
from rock.
