Artist: Chairmaker, Scott Horne Art-A-Whirl Location: Workshop/Studio – 2514 NE 4th St, Mpls 55418 Date/Time: All Art-A-Whirl weekend (Friday-Till-Dark!) Description: 3 cheers for 20 years of Art-A-Whirl! Take your art project home with you! Purchase 3 craft kits for $20. Kits include a peasant stool (silleta), small book rack, and 2 hot pads. Simple instructions are provided. Additionally, artist Scott Horne will be providing demonstrations on assembling the kits all weekend. Original “Art-A-Whirl” Spray Paintings Artist: Dim Media Art-A-Whirl Location: Turbo Tim’s Anything Automotive (2823 Central Ave NE, Mpls 55418) Date/Time: All Art-A-Whirl weekend Description: Dim Media will make twenty, 10"x10" original spray paintings utilizing NEMAA’s 20th Art-AWhirl logo. These paintings will be framed, so that they are ready to hang, and we’ll give the paintings away during Art-A-Whirl on a first come, first serve basis at Turbo Tim's Anything Automotive. WED Performance Artists: Caitlin Karolczak & Jaime Carrera Location: Solar Arts Building, 2nd floor common area. (711 NE 15th Ave, Mpls 55413) Date/Time: Saturday May 16th and Sunday May 17th at 2 pm each day. 1 hour-long performance. Description: “WED” An interactive performance art piece. “WED” will be an interactive performance piece that celebrates community & art while examining gender & culture. The audience will be invited to partake in the piece and to have their portrait captured with the artists to take home as their own art piece. After each performance guests will have the opportunity to be photographed in an artist made set. Create your own Mini Sculpture Artist: Roger Betschler, Roger’s Art Studio Art-A-Whirl Location: St. John’s Lutheran Church (610 Broadway St NE, Mpls 55413) Date/Time: All Art-A-Whirl weekend Description: Create your own clay mini sculpture! Visitors will be encouraged to create a 20th Art-A-Whirl souvenir ornament or mini sculpture piece. This air dry clay project is open ended and gives the participant the flexibility to create something that appeals to their senses. There will be several examples to preview. Artists will demonstrate the procedure, and then time will be allowed for each visitor to create their own artwork. Create your own “Zentangle!” Artist: Barbara Leib Art-A-Whirl Location: St. John’s Lutheran Church (610 Broadway St NE, Mpls 55413) Date/Time: All Art-A-Whirl weekend Description: The Zentangle Method is an easy to learn, fun and relaxing way to create beautiful images by drawing structured patterns. The Artist will provide demonstrations and materials for you to create your very own Zentangle. Enjoy the spontaneity and concentration of this activity, and flex your creative muscle! Projects at the Northrup King Building (1500 Jackson St NE, Mpls 55413): Art-A-Whirl Participatory Animation Station Artist: John Akre, Sloppy Films Location: Northrup King Building, Studio #245 Date/Time: All Art-A-Whirl weekend Description: Animator/videomaker John Akre will be creating a public-participatory stop motion animated film that celebrates the 20 years of Art-A-Whirl. Family-friendly activity! Art supplies will be available for you to help create puppets and props. Share and record your Art-A-Whirl stories for possible use in the animation! Check out the lovely video created during the 2014 Art-A-Whirl. Find the Monsters! Artist: Claymate Creations Location: Northrup King Building, Studio #151 Date/Time: All Art-A-Whirl weekend Description: Participants will look for 10 polymer clay monster sculptures “hidden” around the studio. Each of the 10 special monsters will be imprinted with a 20 to celebrate the 20th Art-A-Whirl. Participants will keep track of the monsters they find using a checklist of descriptive sculpture names. Completed sheets will be dropped in a box decorated with Art-A-Whirl/NEMAA logos and participants will be entered in a drawing to win each of the 10 special monster sculptures. Dancing with Paint to Beethoven Artist: Sandra Dowd Location: Northrup King Building, Studio #248 Date/Time: Friday, May 15, 7:00 PM Description: During the Saturday of Art-A-Whirl, within 20 minutes I will paint a large portrait of Beethoven to “A Fifth of Beethoven” from the movie Saturday Night Fever and the “First Movement” from Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony. I will apply paint strokes in sync to the music. You’ll adore the magic of a blank canvas going from nothing to a recognizable person. Go Fish at Art-A-Whirl! Artist: Greg Lecker Location: Northrup King Building, Gallery Immaginé, Studio #183 Date/Time: All Art-A-Whirl weekend Description: Besides Art-A-Whirl, the month of May marks the start of Minnesota’s fishing season. In celebration of the 20th year of Art-A-Whirl, Go Fish! Don’t leave Art-A-Whirl for your favorite lake – Go Fish – as in the matching card game! Match art concepts illustrated on game pieces to artworks you find in our gallery. Then, draw a picture, write a few words, or share your feelings on the game piece. Enter your game piece into a drawing for a “Trout Stream” painting (2 choices). ALSO, visit the gallery on Thursday, June 4 from 5-9 PM to see a new artwork created with your contribution to the prize pool of entries! Art-A-Whirl Drawing Machine Artist: Jack Pavlik Location: Northrup King Building, Studio #418. Date/Time: All Art-A-Whirl weekend Description: Operate a “drawing machine” and create your own Art-A-Whirl drawing! Delight your senses – This elaborate “spin-o-paint” will activate a drawing tool that will simultaneously create a “storm” of colors while creating “visual music” on a sound sculpture which has been on display in Jack’s studio since 2000. You control the speed of multiple motors and select your drawing tools – resulting in a one-of-a-kind Art-A-Whirl souvenir created by you! Art-A-Whirl Coasters – Letterpress Demonstration Artist: Todd Thyberg, Angel Bomb Location: Northrup King Building, Studio #271. Date/Time: All Art-A-Whirl weekend Description: Demonstrations on letterpress equipment built in the 1950’s. Also enjoy brief history of the letterpress machine and receive a coaster featuring the 20th year Art-A-Whirl® logo (designed by Thyberg), hot off the press! Collaborative Tile Installation Artist: Kirsten Walstead, SoMi Tileworks, Inc. Location: Northrup King Building, Studio #185 Date/Time: All Art-A-Whirl weekend Description: In celebration of Art-A-Whirl’s 20th year, visitors will be invited to make a small painting on a wood “tile” that incorporates the number “20.” SoMi Tileworks will provide materials. Each completed artwork will be hung on the wall in a grouping of other painted wood tiles and the participant will get to choose any other wood “tile” painting to take home with them. SoMi Tileworks will start out the weekend with a variety of painted pieces for inspiration and for the first group of participants to choose from. This activity will create a free souvenir of original artwork for participants to choose and keep!
