Student Civic Engagement Grant Application 2013 What is the Student Civic Engagement Grant? The Student Civic Engagement Grant opportunity available through the Center of Community Service provides financial and programmatic support to students and/or student organizations engaging in mutually beneficial community partnerships Civic engagement describes how an active citizen participates in the life of a community in order to improve conditions for others or to help shape the community’s future.1 Goals of the Student Civic Engagement Grant: Support and address identified community needs. Encourage new and creative programs and/or projects from Northeastern University students in partnership with our community to create positive change. Encourage existing Northeastern University students and student organizations to integrate or expand civic engagement activities. Who is eligible to apply for a Student Civic Engagement Grant? Northeastern University undergraduate or graduate students and student organizations are eligible to apply for funding. Students or groups can apply more than once for this grant, however not for use within the same initiative. This opportunity is not available to directly support the election of any political candidate. Furthermore, this grant is not intended to satisfy an existing university requirement. However, proposals that integrate civic engagement activities into a course or student organization that prove personal interest or commitment beyond requirements are encouraged. How much funding can applicants apply for? An individual Northeastern University undergraduate or graduate student may apply for up to $500 in funding. A Northeastern University recognized student organization may apply for up to $1,000 in funding. Funds are intended to cover program/project expenses (such as speaker fees, travel costs, supplies, food, etc…) and not intended for salary or other indirect costs. Applicants are not guaranteed funding. Budgets submitted as part of the grant application must account for the total amount requested. Grant payments will be disbursed on either a reimbursement basis or payments may be made on your behalf by the Center of Community Service. Requests for reimbursements or purchases must be accompanied by all documentation required by Northeastern University. Guidelines will be provided to grant recipients after their proposal has been accepted. What types of proposals are funded? There is no particular ‘type’ of proposal that will be favored in the selection process. Examples of initiatives that would be eligible might include hosting a panel of experts on a specific issue or planning a special event or activities series in partnership with a community partner. All projects must be completed by May 1, 2013. Particular consideration will be placed on the following for both individual and group applications: Applications that make a strong case for themselves would: Meet and address a demonstrated need identified by the community. Engage other Northeastern University students in the program or project. Demonstrate a plan to seek matching or other funds (if applicable). Involve the Boston neighborhoods of Fenway, Mission Hill, Roxbury, and the South End. Express reflection, thoughtfulness, and cultural understanding of the need. Show evidence of ability to be completed by May 1, 2013. Applicants receiving a Student Civic Engagement Grant must satisfy the following requirements: Submit a complete application and participate in an interview if requested. Attend a mandatory orientation meeting. Complete a final report on the program/project outcomes. Submit appropriate receipts and documentation for grant reimbursement or purchases requested. Present outcomes at the Student Engagement Grant Luncheon Wednesday, April 10th 2013. Examples of previous Civic Engagement Grant recipients: Jumpstart for a Day On April 1st, families from Jumpstart Northeastern’s partner preschools and volunteers from Northeastern University congregated at City Year Headquarters for learning and fun the Jumpstart way! JFAD is a community-wide event that aims to unite NU students, Jumpstart program partners, and community members in supporting early childhood educational opportunities for the children of Roxbury. Each family received a set of five books, community resources from the Roxbury area, and plenty of food and fun. Over 50 volunteers from Jumpstart and NU helped create a fun-filled environment for families and their children. Peacemaker Projects Peace through Play aims to support and sustain the full-time peace programs in three K-8 schools in Boston. The grant was used to enhance multiple Peacemaker Projects, to construct and implement community-based service learning projects that benefit themselves and their communities. Student volunteers worked with their classes to create dialogues about the needs of the students' personal or school communities evaluated those needs and created creative and practical solutions to whatever their classes chose to focus on. The Peacemaker Projects empowered the students in the classes to be active members in their communities and the added funds allow the projects to be more comprehensive.
