JOB ANNOUNCEMENT
Position: Program Assistant
Location: Civic House-University of Pennsylvania
Compensation: $10.00/hr.
Length of employment: May 27 – August 22
Time Commitment:
May 27 - August 15: 30 hours/week
August 16 – 21: Approximately 12 hours/day
August 22: Wrap-Up at Civic House
Position Description: The Program Assistant will mainly provide support to Civic House’s PennCORP preorientation program. The Program Assistant will serve as the PennCORP Student Director and will work
collaboratively with Civic House staff in planning, developing and implementing the PennCORP program, which
includes community service projects, workshops, reflections, and social activities. The PennCORP Student
Director will also be responsible for all of the program logistics, which includes planning for food, creating
schedules, coordinating transportation, etc. In addition, the PennCORP Student Director will help to select
program participants and facilitate communication with them leading up to PennCORP, during PennCORP, and
beyond. The PennCORP Student Director will also be responsible for helping to select and train 8 student leaders
who will be responsible for leading participants throughout the PennCORP program, and be on duty throughout
the program to ensure that things run smoothly. Finally, the PennCORP Student Director will be responsible for
conducting any additional follow up activities that are required.
The Program Assistant may also provide support as needed to the Civic House Philadelphia Nonprofit Internship
Program (CHPNIP) and the Civic House Associates Coalition (CHAC), including planning for student meetings and
workshops.
Background: PennCORP is a pre-orientation program that provides an opportunity for incoming first-year students
to learn about Philadelphia and the various social issues affecting their new community, as well as the many
service and advocacy opportunities available to Penn students. The focus of the program is the University’s
relationship with its community and the ways in which new students can become actively involved as engaged
citizens. The program emphasizes awareness of issues relevant to community service and urban communities,
while exploring these themes through discussions, workshops, and participation in meaningful community service
projects.
Qualifications



Experience with service and advocacy at Penn and/or work in service-learning/Academically Based
Community Service classes.
Familiarity with the Philadelphia area and/or local nonprofits and demonstrated ability to work with
community partners.
Willingness to take initiative as well as accept direction from Civic House staff.



Detail oriented with strong organizational skills.
Demonstrated ability with event/project planning and execution.
Experience facilitating group discussions and training/supervising peers.
Additional Time Commitment: In addition to working in the summer months, PennCORP requires a small amount
of time during the spring to prepare for programming. During the end of the Spring 2014 semester, the
PennCORP Student Director will be required to spend a few hours supporting Civic House staff in the selection of
PennCORP Student Leaders (8), as well as planning for and orienting student leaders during a meeting the
afternoon of Friday, May 2.
