THE BOOK OF REVELATION
WEEK 9: Jesus Renews
What to Know: Jesus will renew us
What to Do: Know God more deeply
SCRIPTURE REFERENCES
Revelation 21:1-5
Romans 8:20-21
Psalm 23:4
Message Point 1
This weekend’s message looked at a passage in Revelation that focuses on renewal. From this passage in
Revelation in 21 we learned that Jesus will renew what has been ruined by the fall of man. This fall had far
reaching consequences that still impact us personally and our world today. Many things around us are broken
and not functioning at their originally designed capacity, however we can take hope and encouragement that
Jesus is beginning this renewal now and will one day be fully complete.
Message Point 2
The second part of the message focuses on some of the things that we can expect when Jesus renews all. This
will be at a future time and some of the benefits we will receive include knowing God personally and face to face.
Although God may at sometimes in our lives seem distant and far off now, one day his presence will be fully and
perfectly with us as we spend eternity with him. We can also look forward to no pain, perfect health and the
restoration of creation.
Message Point 3
Lastly, the weekend message reminded us that since Jesus is renewing all, there are a couple of things that we
can do to make the most out of the life that we have been given. The first thing we can do as we look ahead is to
get to know God more deeply. Since we will spend eternity with him, let us take every opportunity to pursue him
and know him more while we are temporarily on earth. Secondly, we can take all of our hurts and pains to Jesus
and ask for his healing.
discussion guide
Here are a few tips to help you facilitate this week’s discussion:
1. Open your small group with an icebreaker.
2. Don’t ask every question. Choose a few from each section that pertain to your group.
ICE BREAKER
*What is one food you looked forward to eating when you were a child?
DISCIPLESHIP MOMENT
-SOAP (Ask if anyone would like to share an insight from a recent devotional time)
-SHARE (Ask if anyone would like to share about reaching out to someone far from God)
-STEP (Ask if anyone would like to share an update on taking an action step from last week)
QUESTIONS: Read Revelation 21:1-5 together, then break into groups of 3 to discuss the questions.
SECTION 1:
1. What stands out to you most about this passage?
2. Share about a time when you felt far from God or it appeared as if he were distant. What
happened and what encouragement do you feel as a result of verse 3?
3. What has caused you mourning, crying or pain in the last year? What does it mean to you to
know that this will one day pass away (v.4)?
SECTION 2:
1. How is your view of spiritual growth and mission impacted in light of the truth that renewal
begins now and not just when we get to heaven?
2. What is one thing you think God might be calling you to do in your spiritual growth and
discipleship this fall? How does that challenge you?
3. What action step do you think God is leading you to take as a result of this week’s message?
What is one way you can apply this truth to your life this week?
4. How can our group specifically pray for that step over the next week?
SECTION 3:
1. Share one reason you are thankful for our summer series on the Book of Revelation.
2. How has our summer study of Revelation enhanced your view of the Bible? How has the study
impacted your faith in a practical way?
3. Now that our study of Revelation is over, how do you feel about this book of the Bible? Is that
different than when we first began our study or Revelation?
4. What do you hope to carry with you from your time spent in the study of Revelation?
ACTIVITY/CHALLENGE
*Take some time to talk about how your group members can know God more deeply. Ask each member if you
can follow up with them next week about how that is going in their lives.
PRAYER PROMPT
*Leaders, please take about 10 minutes to pray for each of our ministries that will be launching this fall. Some of
those are small groups, our equipping track classes, support ministries and workshops! Ask God to be at work
helping people grow in their faith and leadership, as well as their ability to make disciple-making disciples!
