Dean of Student Life Leadership Public Schools’ mission is to prepare students for college success and community leadership. LPS provides pathways to college for urban students of poverty and color in small charter high schools. You will also become part of the LPS Network leadership, functioning as an R & D team addressing the challenges of urban education. We are seeking an exceptional Dean of Student Life for an opening for 2012-2013 at LPS San Jose. The Dean of Students is a key member of the school's leadership team, serving as part of the administrative cabinet, working with the community, and mentoring teacher-advisors. This individual's primary responsibility is to foster students’ growth from adolescence to young adulthood. The Dean of Students is a year round position reporting to the School Principal. Responsibilities: Oversee Student Discipline Program Foster a caring school environment Work with students and the school community to a create a safe and supportive academic culture Review and implement discipline policies Make recommendations for specific student disciplinary consequences Monitor system for recording student disciplinary behavior and actions Work with advisors on effective leadership and support strategies Work with teachers on effective approaches to classroom management Monitor student attendance and recommend appropriate responses Manage Academic Intervention and Support Support student centered classroom strategies Use data to guide instruction and helping teachers to effectively use data Foster a strong partnership between departments With Principal and colleagues, monitor grades and make recommendations regarding specific and tailored interventions With Principal, monitor student credits and college requirements Coordinate state standardized tests and internal testing of students Communicate with families regarding academic issues Coordinate Student Activities With Principal and colleagues, coordinate and monitor student activities Design and facilitate student leadership retreats, other college and field trips Build community support for student activities Supervise the athletic activities and build the athletic program Coordinate Week Without Walls Forge Connections with the Broader Community Build partnerships with regional community organizations Develop and sustain relationships with future, current, and alumni parents 5.12 Develop Serve as a liaison to the Parent Guardian Association Essential Qualifications: Experience with diverse youth in an urban school district Spanish bi-lingual is a plus High school teaching experience School leadership experience Successful experience managing classroom behavior and student discipline Commitment to both excellence and equity Team player Academic expertise: a B.A. or M.A. A commitment to both excellence and equity Experience in teaching with varied instructional strategies Experience with collaborative work Excellent communicator Strong commitment to the Leadership mission and values Ability to work under pressure and adapt easily Comfortable with charter environment including fast growth and flexible roles LPS strives to make our schools a rewarding place to work, teach, and learn by actively fostering a professional learning community for staff, students and families that exemplify our values of commitment, respect, responsibility, valuing our students and employees, and harnessing the power of our network to create a larger learning community.
