Medication and Sickness policy
Medication
Nursery staff must be informed of any medication your child is taking. Any
medication brought into the nursery must be recorded in the ‘medication form,
Medication must be clearly labelled with the child’s name, dosage and frequency
of dosage. The Nursery will only administer medicine prescribed by a doctor and
with prior written agreement from parents/carers. The dosage, time, the name
of who administers the medicine will be recorded in the medication file, and
parent/carer should sign at the end of each day.
Antibiotics
If a child is prescribed antibiotics by their doctor, he/she must remain absent
from the nursery for a period of 48 hours. (NHS policy) This gives enough
time for the antibiotics to become effective and the child not to be infectious.
Also if a child is poorly enough to need antibiotics then they should not be at
the nursery 2 days off should give them sufficient time to recover.
Sickness
It's unavoidable that small children catch all kinds of minor infections. Any child
who suffering from a doubtful rash which could be contagious, sickness,
diarrhoea or high temperature, should be kept at home until a doctor has
verified that the symptoms have disappeared. If the rash is diagnosed as not
contagious, the child will be allowed in the nursery with a doctor’s note to
confirm this.
If the child’s temperature shows beyond 37.5°C
Baby or child’s temperature will be taken with a digital ear thermometer whilst
they are in the setting and will be recorded in Child’s Illness Record.
We administer calpol or Nurofen as directed by pharmacist/doctor.
The child will be given plenty of fluids and take their clothes off if needed.
The temperature will be checked every hour after calpol has been
administered.(Reviewed April 2014 with parents & Medical professional’ support)
If the temperature still remains in the same degree, or temperature goes up,
call parents and ask them to collect the child. This shows that there was no
response to the medication and the child needs medical support. If child needed
medical support he/she should not return to nursery for 24 hours. Children with
a high temperature (fever)> 38°C should not come in to Nursery, they should
stay at home until the child is well again and the temperature remains within the
normal range < 37.5°C

Taking children to Hospital
In case of emergency the manager reserves the right to take the child to the
hospital. If a child has to be taken to the hospital one member of staff will
accompany the child at all times. Another member of staff will notify the
emergency services and the parents. The member of staff accompanying the
child to the hospital will have an emergency card containing all relevant
information about that child with them. The child will only be moved in an
ambulance and not a staff car. The parent will be expected to meet us in the
hospital immediately.
Nursery allows children to attend Nursery with the following conditions:
 Discharge from eye: Child can attend to Nursery with an eye drop

mixture and allergy relief unless it is prescribed for that child by a doctor
with a pharmacy label on.
