Describe the pharmacologic characteristics of alcohol ingestion. 2. List three ways the Louisiana Poison Center can assist in emergency preparedness planning and response. 3. Describe the potential dangers of designer drug use. 4. Provide the names of three previous threat pathogens. 5. Describe Pharmaceuticals found in the home that may be abused. 6. List three annex topics found in the latest IOM guidance for Crisis Standards of Care. Course Overview: This course will provide an overview of the Louisiana Poison Center resources for select toxic emergencies and disaster preparedness including the substance abuse agents of alcohol, designer drugs, and pharmaceuticals found in the home. Overviews will also include an infectious disease briefing and recent guidance on Crisis Standards of Care from the Institute of Medicine. Faculty: Knox Andress, RN, BA, AD, FAEN, is the Director of Emergency Preparedness and Education for the Louisiana Poison Control Center at the Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center, Shreveport, LA. He has been an instructor of Hazmat for Healthcare; Advanced Disaster Life Support; NIMS instructor; and Hospital Incident Command System. He also serves as the Designated Regional Coordinator (DRC) for Louisiana Region 7 hospitals coordinating Health and Human Services (previously HRSA) Louisiana hospital bioterrorism preparedness and planning. Thomas Arnold, MD, FAAEM, FACMT, a Board Certified in Emergency Medicine and Medical Toxicology, currently serves as Professor and Chairman of the Department of Emergency Medicine at LSU Health Sciences Center – Shreveport and as the Medical Director of the Section of Clinical Toxicology and the Louisiana Poison Center in Shreveport Mark Ryan, PharmD, is the Director of the Louisiana’s Poison Control Center. He teaches clinical toxicology to medical students, pharmacists, nurses, physicians, EMTS, and firemen. He is also an instructor for the Advanced Hazardous Materials Life Support course. Acetaminophen toxicity, management of snakebites, designer drugs of abuse, heavy metal toxicity and hydrogetn toxicity are some of his areas of special interest. Continuing Education Credit: Nursing – 6.5 contact hours will be awarded for this offering by the Louisiana Hospital Association for complete attendance of the program.
